you know, I honestly can't say if there is any written documentation on building. But there are (or were!) regular building classes that would be good to attend. Or maybe just sit and watch people in the sandboxes to get some idea.
As for round windows, there are a few ways to go about it, really.
My preference is to make your wall panel a regular old rectangle, hollow it, but with the hollow shape as a circle, then inset a second prim to be your glass. it doesnt necessarily have to be round or even fit that great this way.
If you want to get into custom texturing, you can of course do this in one prim by creating your wall panel texture complete with alpha'd window pane.

Like Kris said, there are classes. Which is good - but never been. Best way to build is just play around with the edit feature. At first - you'll be unhappy with your builds. But practice makes perfect! The way I learned, just go around and look at builds. Learn from them, and try to build something like it. You'll learn a lot - trust me. Remember, HAVE FUN!

When I'm on land that has a low prim alotment I make two textures. A solid texture (for walls without windows) and use alpha for the window texture. Then slap it on a prim.
Cheap, reuseable, and keeps the prim count down.
That's just my preference. When I have prims to spare I do like others (Kris gave a good example.) and hollow out a prim, then drop another prim in for the window.

It has/had a perfect ingame tutorial I flew by there a week or two ago. Unless it's disappeared in the last week, chances are it's still there. Good suggestion Vortex, forgot about that place.

Things I'd like to learn to build
05-16-2005 09:31
The Ivory Tower is a good source of building info., but doesn't cover everything. Things I'd like to learn to build are:
Waterfalls & scripted fountains Biological shapes Hats & other attachments
If someone can point me in the right direction for instructions or advice, I'd appreciate it!

It has/had a perfect ingame tutorial This is easily the most critically useful learning area on the entire grid. I spent a lot of time there as a newb.

most definitely the ivory tower of prims
i'll also drop you a copy of the take-it-apart merry-go-round on you when i log in tonight. (or you can pick up a copy of it at the fair grounds in the FairChang Project island (southern edge of the island if i remember correctly).
It has some screenshot-based tutorials and allows you to learn by taking apart actual implementations of builds, seeing the way different prims are used, cut, textured, linked, etc.
