Hi all,

I'm having some serious issues with Maya 2008 and Qarl's exporter from Maya. I don't know what it is, but it really results in some very...strange stuff. Has anyone else had that problem?

I first tried with a zBrush poly sphere into Mudbox, then exporter as OBJ into Maya, then to Sculptie.

That didn't work. It gave me a sculptie pic layed out like a box texture map for some reason (sideways cross).

So then I tried zBrush poly sphere into Maya directly as OBJ.

That didn't work. Same result.

Then I tried OBJ from Maya into Maya...to see what's going on. Different results but same problem: very strange results (and not a sculptie sphere when you try it out).

Then I tried simply making a NURBS and Poly sphere, even with 16 isos on the NURBS and a simple default poly sphere in Maya.

Looks more like a sphere but with a basic trench down the side...basically, not really a sphere.

Has anyone else had those problems or is it just me? I thought of tearing out my hair, but I like my hair, so I figured I'd ask instead.

Ya.

I upgraded but I hadn't used it until yesterday, and then I remembered I had some sculpties I wanted to import.

But..I think I fixed it. I used an OBJ from Wings3d (a sphere) and imported to mudbox, then sculpted, exported OBJ to Maya and exported the sculptie. Seems to have worked, but I'm still checking the geometry to make sure.

But so far, it seems to have fixed my problem. The bad part is that the objects I did before with another base sphere will have to be redone from scratch because rebuilding it doesn't seem to work at all. =/

But at least it works...so far.

I have been using 2008 and Qarls exporter for a month or so with no problems whatsoever.

I can't speak for zbrush or mudbox as I have never used them.

the problem is that you are starting with a zbrush sphere

you cant just export anything to sl

in my experience, scultping with polys ( the way you do in zbrush)
only works when you start with the wings polygons that are made
for sl.

otherwise apparently the vertices get reordered and make a mess

you dont have to download wings to get the shapes you can get them in the forum
under omei turnbull's wings exporter

ps i am using 2008, and it seems to be working fine, although i cant get to sl,
so im not sure

As I said......

I already fixed the problem. =)

On and off, I've been using Maya since 2000 (version 1.5 - took a small class at the time when it was new and I was looking at art school in a more serious way), as well as Nendo (out of which sprang Wings3D when Mirai went bust - Nendo was $100 USD which I bought when I was first trying stuff out in 1999 for fun.). I'm no huge 3D artist and stuff but I do understand the basics. =)

The problem was zBrush, yes. But I was told beforehand that zBrush polys were better at mapping textures later in Maya before exporting. That's why I tried it. Didn't turn out to work so I went back to Wings, and that did work. =)
