Amputation question

A fellow resident and I are working on amputations. She says that they are only possible at the joint and not mid-bone. But I have been doing a little experimentation and I found a quick and easy way to remove part of a leg, but something remains hanging down from the end of the limb. I'm attaching two pictures. One from a distance and one close-up.

Does anyone know what is hanging down? Do you have any suggestions about how to eliminate this? Do you know how to do mid-bone amputations?

I'm a noob by the way. I discovered SL just two weeks ago.

I really appreciate any help you can give!

Yes, you need the invisiprim script. Put it in a prim and attach the prim to the leg, adjusting it at the right spot and it will not been seen.

:)

oh I am not sure where to get that script...you could search the scripting forum :)

Hope this helps!

Here's what I did:

Go to the SecondLife folder in your Program Files folder. Open the character folder. Find a file called avatar_skeleton.xms. Make a copy of that file and save it somewhere so you can put everything back like it belongs when you're done playing.

Then open that avatar_skeleton file with Notepad and search for the word mHipRight. On the second line of that paragraph, change the "scale=1.000 1.000 1.000" to "scale=1.000 1.000 0.600". Then wherever you see the word scale in that same paragraph, change their values to 0.0 0.0 0.0

Then save that file.

Now re-open Second Life. Your character should now have an amputation, but it's only visible to you. Then go look around. All the characters should also have amputations!

It's not real, and it's only visible to you. But it's a start.

Then to restore Second Life to normal, replace the modified version of avatar_skeleton with the original one you have safely stored somewhere else, then restart the program.

Yes, you're using invisiprims, that stuff hanging out must be a bone? (kidding)
If you use a tube or a circle it can be a hollow or a hole size...

That's a neat trick you discovered, Jenni! But as you've discovered, it changes how all avatars are seen on your computer, not how everyone in SL sees your avatar.

If I were to try this, I would probably make a scultpy with the shape of the amputated limb, and attach it to the thigh. You would "amputate" the lower part of the leg with an animation that rotated and held the knee joint so that the lower leg was hidden inside the thigh. To avoid a visible jseam between the unadorned AV and the partially amputated log, I would have the sculpty cover the thigh as well as provide the shape for the partial limb.

The invisiprim technique is easier, but the results might or might not be to your liking. An invisiprim will hide all 32 bit textures (which includes the texturing of an AV) that lie behind the invisiprim. In the case of using it to hide a leg, it will also hide some of the other objects that would normally be seen behind the space left by the amputation. If you are using this in a well-controlled environment, you can arrange not to use any 32 bit textures in the environment. But if you want your amputee to go out and about in SL, be aware that people will sometimes see things in the background disappear and reappear as the avatar moves.

I can't take much credit for this little trick. The other resident showed me this procedure, but she made the entire leg disappear at the hip by entering all 0s. I played around with the settings and discovered how to make just part of the leg disappear. That was the effect I was looking for.

I've seen a few amputations (along with replacment limbs, peg legs, skeleton parts etc)

there are a set of textures, known commonly as "invisiprim" that will wipe out the avatar mesh.... beatfox xevious popularized them years back, and if you search for his name and invisiprim you'll find the texture uuid's that you want...

then your effect will be in world, for everyone to see, and only apply to you ;)
