I would cut it in half, texture the flat part as the light, and the round part as the shade. Now if youre talking about using the new lighting properties, and only having the light come from the flat part, that is not possible at this time. Currently the entire prim emits light.

Local lighting effects are not directional at this time, nor are they blocked by prims that don't emit light. So it's easy to make a light source like a candle or a torch, but you can't make a lamp with a lampshade that directs the light in a specific direction.

A single prim can be made to glow by enabling the property in Edit mode for that prim. You'll only see the glow if you have local lighting enabled, and you'll usually only see the 8 or so closest light sources as casting local light.

yup, make the lightbeam itself glow and use a semi transparan texture for a more realistic lightbeam look

also you can use the columns of light you make as light sources, adjust the intensities, and make some realistic lighting affects since you won't see the insides of the lamp shades ;)

if we had a negative light value system we could make shadows too!
