Hi! I am fairly new to building, but I am figuring things out through lots of playing around (and The Ivory Tower of Prims!). Anyway, I have a really basic question that is driving me nuts...

How does one apply different textures to different faces of the same prim? I hear so many offhand references to it, and I am sure it is so simple that I will smack myself when someone tells me, but I have tried everything. Clicking on certain faces, clicking with various keys held down (alt, ctrl, shift, etc); I even tried "edit linked parts" on a single prim. I am just at a loss. Someone please help!

Thanks!

Hello and welcome to SL!

It's a pretty simple process. Just find the texture you want in your inventory and drag it to the face of the prim you want it applied to.

Hope that helps!

Hi Taylyn and welcome,
When you are in the edit mode for the prim you wish to texture, check the circle along the top choices Select texture and then left click on only the side of the prim you wish to change. Your texture choices come up, then you can pick the one you want for that side and it applies. Just click different sides and you will see a little white circle appear on the prim face. You can do more than one side at a time by holding the shift key as you select each side you want done. If you have trouble please IM me in game and I'm happy to help you ok?

Thanks for the answers.

Dug, I will try the dragging thing.

Jack, I have no trouble changing the texture of the whole prim. It's when I try to do as you suggest, and I left click (on any face), it selects and changes the whole thing.

Oh! Maybe I didn't have the Select Texture circle selected, maybe I have just been going to the texture tab? I will doublecheck that...

Thanks again!

Talynn,

If you have selected the single texture correctly you should see a line with a big circle superimposed on it!

Dragging textures onto each face will do it, but figuring out 'select texture' will be really handy because as it suggests you can edit each individual texture or face. So you can have it repeat once on one side and 20 times on another.

Your problem *might* be this - when you select 'select texture', each face of the prim is automatically selected. You have to actually click on just one face to select that, otherwise you'll still be applying the texture to all sides.

You can use shift+click to add faces to your selection as Jack said, but also to deselect them. So since 'select texture' will select every face, you could, for example, then shift+click one individual face of the prim, and then you'll texture everything but that side. Lots of ways to play with it :)

Yep, that's what it was. I was only going to the texture tab - I was not selecting the "select texture" radio button... I knew I would want to smack myself! Thanks a lot for the help, folks.
