So I have this 16 story round tower (no that's not a typo) all nicely hollowed out and textured to accommodate an elevator platform. From the ground to the top there are only 6 places that it needs to stop. I was thinking just a flat nicely textured 1 prim object with up and down buttons that would take you up or down to the next useful level.
Should I buy some pre-made thing (if anything pre-made could meet those needs)? Should I hire someone to make one? Can I manage it my newbie self? Any advice would be most welcome as I am really tired of running up and down 16 flights of stairs.

Persoanly I think it would be neet if you made the buttons "Sit on touch", "Warp pos" teleporters and left a elevator patform at every level.
Then again I prefer speed over beauty.

I would contact SuperMouse Moose about his, he has an elevator in Mouse Mart so he might be able to send you in the right direction to buying one or making one. I think a sliding door script might actually make a decent elevator but you'd need a long timeout and some way to make it slide to different locations. Maybe that would only be good for a 2 story building... But yeah, contact SuperMouse Moose and ask about it

there is a elevator like the one you are looking for at clubsides sand box, so if you search for a person named clubside (i think there is only one ) you could ask him how he made it, mind you there is one drawback with that elevator it does tend to shoot you up into the sky when you are getting elevated up and you end up falling to a very shameful landing, but hey its great fun, im sure you could most likely fix this (if you wanted to becuase it is so fun) by putting a seat or pose ball of some kind on the elevator platform.

Elevators are nice - teleporters are better
08-10-2006 06:52
I tried elevators - made a couple based on some free scripts. They are cool but teleporters are much, much better.
Teleporters are better beacuse we don't actually need elevators in SL since we can fly on our own, sitting in/on an elevator does not make a lot of sense (you need to sit on the elevator platform to attach to it - other aproaches have you walk in place to move with the platform), and calling an elevator is always a problem beyond a certain distance.
While you can address many of the problems (sitting, calling) I think teleporting is more easily understood here in SL and sort of expected by most people.
A teleporter system can be as simple as a cube that moves you to something more elaborate.
There are free teleporters - Cubey Terra'a Mark-line of teleporters are a great start. In fact, there are several commercial teleporters that look like they are based on the Mark III and Mark IV teleporters. I personally use very-heavily-modified versions of both for my apartments.
If you really want to stick with elevators, check the scripting library for some scripts to get you started. Freebie places in-world often have various types of elevators too. If you're looking for something sophisticated that has opening doors, call butons, etc - then you'll have to ask/shop around.
Good luck!

You mean I have a lovely 16 story elevator shaft and it may just be impractical to use it. I'll check those folks in game and see if they can come up with something...
Thanks

"The yiffers club" has a really neet looking elevator that you stand in. It's slow because it relys on pusing you up, but it is nicely textured.
Too bad there is nothing to see outside.
An glass walled elevator is a useful item if you want to show a view.

From: Tess Whitcroft You mean I have a lovely 16 story elevator shaft and it may just be impractical to use it. Don't be discouraged! There is a lovely elevator at Roarth Tower (Hartwick region: 70,85,107). I enjoyed using it because there are no doors on the elevator and when you are riding in it (sitting), and *if* you use Mouselook, then you get a very cool view of all of the floors going by and what is in them! The speed of this elevator seemed good to me. One of the downsides to an elevator is that if you do not switch to Mouselook (or make some equivalent camera view change), then all the rider sees is a view of shaft walls, etc. and cannot see their avatar. Anyway, go check it out. Where is your tower? ..a.nd if you do build your elevator, please let us know!

I sell elevators on Serpent Isle. Just do a search for serpent isle boutique and go take a look at my selection. Working on more textures for them too as well as new sounds.

Hank Ramos made an elevator script at some point. Was free and very easy to use, probably one of my first ever edited scripts. However he probably rued the day he created it after having 16,357,342 IMs from me not knowing how to work it . Poor Hank, I was such a newbie.

i've got a one-person sit-down 'vator i modded from seagal neville's OS script, with smooth accel/decel. they're free!! stop by my "research park", take a test ride up to the skydeck, and feel free to 'take a copy' of the 'vator to use!!
(frankly, i don't think there's anything 'intuitive' about teleporting, and you certainly don't get a sense of -where- you're going, unless there's time to actually see which way you're going... )

From: Nyoko Salome frankly, i don't think there's anything 'intuitive' about teleporting, and you certainly don't get a sense of -where- you're going, unless there's time to actually see which way you're going... ) I agree - there is nothing intuitive about teleporting - it just happens to be the more common way of getting from place to place in SL. So, if you need to go elsewhere, a teleporter could take you and that experience/expectation would be consistent with the way you likely travel in most cases throughout SL. While making things real is cool, try thinking a little differently. For example, in a sim called "The Future", there is a push-based teleportation system. You just walk into (collide) with a prim to start a trip through a network of pushers which get you to your destination. I have seen this techniques used in a couple of malls to move avatars from one level to another too. You get the same effect as an elevator with the added beneift of a 'cool' factor That's how I think of a teleporter versus an elevator - do something a little differently with a cool factor. Teleporters might seem ordinary, but when you combine them with ultra-fast teleports and other cool features (like security) you end up with a very useful, prim friendly transportation system that is easy to use and does not have to deal with issues like calling an elevator from beyond chat or shout range, handling multiple people, and elevator parking (where do you leave the elevator when someone is finished using it). Just my L$6 (about 2 cents)

There is a freebie item called "Elevator in a box" that is a good starting point. It is a physical, non-sit elevator thay works fairly well for multiple standing passengrs. I modified it into a rather nice glass three-story elevator for the Delacriox Anchorage House in the SE corner fo the Desire sim. Just look for the large building with docks at water level and a terra-cotta paved parking area on the roof. Cecilia Delacroix now owns the house it's part of. Be nice and ask her before taking a ride in her elevator, OK!
"Elevator in a box" starts as a three-sided, 10 M tall self-replicating shaft and a one-prim platform that is chat command activated. The script is open-source, so you can modify it fairly easily. I altered mine to listen on a non-zero chat channel, and used call buttons at each level that 'shout' the verbal commands on that channel, and that 'whisper' the commands for the buttons in the elevator car.
For your shaft, you could easily drop that script into a round disc-shaped prim.
Alternatively, Seagel Neville has an excellent sit elevator script in the scripting Library here in the forums. Again, you can drop the script into any prim. It only allows one person at a time to use it, but it's effectively always ready at any stop. It also isn't restricted to vertical travel. It can go sideways or on the diagonal, as well!

I just got Elevator in a Box to work for me, couldn't figure out the voice command before. It works well for me. It is a rather good unit to start with especially if your levels are not at uniform distances. It will work from both a set distance between levels or you can list the Z-axis hights.

From: Roland Gray Mortus or Ceera. I've been wresling with the 'Elevator in a box' on and off for ages and never could work out how to make it work (I build but can't script to save my life), can you possibly fill me in on the command method, i'll be eternaly grateful It's been a while since I used it. (This thread is rather old). Some issues I found: Since the elevator is physical, it can get 'stuck' if it bumps into things along the path of movement. Make sure you don't have any tangible prims that block the elevator car. My elevator build with this product had 4 'rails' at the corners of the car, and was otherwise exposed, with platforms at each stop. I had to make sure the holes in the platforms allowed enough room to pass the car (a wider gap than you might imagine), and had to make the rails phantom so it wouldn't get stuck on them. I think I had to allow about a 0.1M to 0.2M gap between the edges of the elevator car and any tangible objects for it to work. The notecard that comes with the elevator tells you to set up the heights for each stop. It doesn't state that these are absolute values, based on the root prim the scripts is in. They were thinking of a simple one-prim platform as the elevator. But if you build an elevator car and use that prim as the floor, measure from the floor position. I would manually edit the Z-axis height of the car to get it where I wanted it, then would edit linked parts, select the root prim, and note its Z-axis height for each stop along the way. Use that value for the stop on the notecard. The root prim of the elevator is what listens for the commands. If it is out of chat range from you (more than 30 M away), *it can't hear you*. I made call buttons at each floor, set the car and buttons to use a non-zero channel, like 77, and had the buttons shout the commands on that channel. You could also use the new llRegionSay command, again on a non-zero channel, to ensure the commands are heard no matter how far away the elevator car is. You can also link a set of command buttons to the car itself, and have them use llWhisper on the chosen command channel.
