You can focus on some object on top and near the surface by pressing alt and "dragging" your mouse. Then use the ctl key (while holding the alt as well) to move camera up or down. With a bit of practise you should be able to look under the ground and select your prims.

Or

You could also go into debug mode and somewhere there is a render submenu item that allows you not to render the surface. Then you should be able to click on your prims.

There is a way to make the ground disappear so you can find things underground.

Ctrl-Alt-D opens the Debug menu, then:
Client/Rendering/Types/Surface Patch will make the ground disappear..it can be a bit spooky at first. Find your object and select it and move it up.

Then go back in and re select Surface Patch and your ground will reappear.

Good luck!

Whatever prim you want untouched, you should change to "Locked" in Edit. That way you can draw a square around the area where you suspect your lost items are located and move them up from the ground without moving your floor as well. You won't be able to do anything to your floor while you keep it "Locked".
