I couldnt find anything on this file format and converting it into something usable for Second Life. As many are aware, VRML (VRML97, wrl extension) has been used for virtual worlds as far back as the mid-late 90's.

With defecting creators populating SL since 2005, I'm surprised I don't see any importing tools readily available. I only see reference to 3DMax, but that's only one prog out of many and accommodates its resident WYSIWYG file and not the end result files. That's a lot of years of work to have to start over again. I have an inventory of items from 3 years of output alone. Many scripted in code as well, so importing the wrl file would be their only means to bring some nice stuff into their new environment.

Does anyone have any leads short of obtaining a phenomenally expensive modeling prog just to import from other VRML progs just to export into SL?

Thanks for your insight

Long story short, technical constraints within SL prevent one from simply importing any arbitrary mesh, and that certainly includes VRML files. For more details on these technical constraints, there are already tons of threads in this forum discussing the issue, or just wait until Chosen shows up to post an essay about it ;)

As you learn more about #D modeling in SL, you will see that the formats they use are totally optimized for downloading, and that this makes them very different from other format.

In SL, almost all the 3D is rendered on your local client in real time, since the scene can change rapidly and totally unpredictably at any time (such as 10,000 flying penises appearing).

it is sort of a Zen thing...learn to love your tools. 8-)
