Hi!
I have a question about copyright In-World....
If i see a product made with prims, buy it and i study it, looking for the prims that it´s made of, can i use similar prims in similar positions to create a similar product?

Example:
I bought a table, i saw that the upper part is a box, every leg is a cilinder and the glass is another box. So, is it ok to create a similar table using that kind of prims in those positions?

Thanks!

It is a quite grey area, in one sense there is not one million ways to make a table. On the other side, you just admitted you took the object apart in order to reproducing it.

I personally would stay away from stuffs made by other persons and make my own original designs.

I sometimes take a look at things other people have built that I like, then break them down into the prims used with my eyes. After that I'll recreate them for myself, but only for myself as it's such a direct copy it wouldn't be very nice to sell it. I just never buy things I can do just as good of job building, or better. I'm certain many other people do the same.

However, as it's been said, there are only so many ways to make a table. You can't own an idea, after all. If that were the case then very few people would be building/selling things in Second Life, or First Life. It's fine to build something in a similar manner as somebody else, but if your intent is to sell the item then adding your own personal touch would be a good idea.

Inspiration has to come from somewhere, after all.

Copyright law is real world. There is no special inside SL copyright law.

My simple minded understanding is:

If you derive from some other work, and you cause the creator financial damage, then they can try to come and get you.

There are special cases for satire, critique, and, of course, rap artists.

this is a grey area indeed but if you were just looking at how it was made then theres
nothing wrong with that or if you just recreated it for your self.

the problem is that if you recreate something that somebody else has already
built and then trying to resell it then you will run into some problems with the origonal
creator.

but im not accusing you of trying to reproduce something for profit or anything
because i have also reproduced some models just to have full permissions
but for personal use only.

it is actually how i build stuff some times, first i would start the re building of an object until
i get half way done, then i start looking at how to make it different from the original.

i like that you can look at the work that went into the model and see how it was made.

i hope this thread don't turn into another copyrights war like the others.

I see nothing wrong with what he did, as long as the textures are different. There are only so many ways to assemble a table using prims.
