Ok, I am assuming this is a common problem but have not as yet been able to find anyone else having trouble with it, though, it seems so simple....
I'm just learning to build, and I thought I would take a stab at a house.... but it seems like every time I get to a certain point and try to link, I get an error message telling me that says "link failed - the objects are too far apart"
Well they are not far apart... they are touching! this usually happens when I try to link walls to the foundation.
I have tried linking as I add each piece on... like a daisy chain... but I eventually get to a certain point and I get the error message, and I cannot finish my house to keep as one object.
I know I CANT be building to big...I'm not even a fourth of the size of some of the castles I have seen in SL!!

The center of all of the prims must be within 30 meters of each other. So, to attach the wall it must be within 30 meters of the farthest part of your foundation. That's 30 meters in three dimensions, so sometimes it seems they should link but they're really further than 30 meters apart. You can't, for example, attach walls to opposite ends of a 30-meter building if you expect to have a floor and a roof.
In the future, please use more descriptive subjects, like "having trouble linking my house".
Good luck! Anya

Thank you for the help Anya (love the name, BTW)
I guess it is a distance thing then.
Umm... ok I have one more question, that I will ask within this thread rather than post a new one...
How can I tell the measurements between things? Or even the measurements of ONE prim? I have just been kinda "eyeballing" everything I build. Is there a more accurate way?

On the object tab you'll find the X/Y/Z dimensions of each prim you select, and their X/Y/Z position. If you are building square to the grid (i.e. north-south, east-west) the X-axis runs east-west, the Y-axis north-south (if I recall; maybe I got those backwards) and the Z-axis up-down. You can know how far things are apart along one axis by comparing their position along that axis. If they are not aligned neatly you'll have to use the distance formula you certainly remember from your trigonometry class. You might never have to do that since you rarely need to know how far things are apart. In this case, all you need to know is if they are more or less than 30 meters apart, and you'll learn that when you try to link If you haven't already, click the button that turns on the grid (in the upper right of the edit window). This will give you a rule in meters when you move things. Anya

Try using builder's buddy for saving and restoring your house. It's not the solution for everyone but i have found it very useful. /15/ff/96777/1.html

Thank you very much for all of your help. Umm... "You'll certainly remember from your trigonometry class" Hehe... V.V Math is one of the reasons I never finished college, and... so I never made it to Trig... its something I have always struggled with. Give me a class I can BS my way through, like Psychology or English and its no problem. But I digress. I think that if I play with it long enough, I can figure out what all those numbers mean! Thanks Again!

If you head over to the Gnubie store they have a building grid. It's on the back wall with the texture packs. Make a prim 10 wide x10 long and then apply the texture. I usally build on top of that grid.
