Groups are actually a social thing, rather than a building thing. You can join groups to keep in touch with like-minded individuals, or to share land and projects.

What you're probably looking for is linking, which is how you combine primitives (prims) into a larger, composite object. You can link together up to 255 prims, all of which must be within 30 meters of each other (or considerably closer if they're small prims).

To link prims together:
  1. Select all the prims to be linked by holding down Shift and clicking each prim that is to become part of the object. The last prim that you select becomes the root prim, which has special meaning for scripting. You can also select multiple prims by entering edit mode (right-click an object and select Edit, or just press Ctrl+3), then click and drag a box around all the prims you want to select.
  2. Press Ctrl+L to link the selected objects together. If you need to unlink them again, you can do so by pressing Ctrl+Shift+L.
