Replacing basic avatar mesh in SL?

Apologies if this has been addressed; I wasn't able to find anything here about this question.

I've seen some avatar shapes in-game that appear to be more radical than just deformations of the standard avatar mesh. Am I correct in believing the standard mesh can be completely replaced with a new one? If so, are there tutorials or other information on the process of rigging and exporting/importing them so as to be SL-compatible?

My current tools are Rhino3D, LightWave and Poser, but if the process requires another app that's also useful information.

Many thanks in advance!

Noes... Everything on the inworld avatar is done inworld... For greater extremes, prim attachments and special animations are used. It's a limited tool, but we do our best with it. (^_^)y
