What are the land requirements for a Skybox?

I am wanting to build a skybox home for myself. I have practiced building a little bit and I understand how to get the items to the height I require. However, what I don't understand is how land ownership works in reference to a skybox.
I want to build my skybox around 700m in the air, which I BELIEVE is higher than ownership of land dictates.
Currently, I am not paying monthly for an account (though I have put money into the account for purchases), so I own NO land. The question I have is, do I have to own land to build a skybox? Furthermore, if I build a skybox in the air and leave it there, will it stay indefinitely? Is there anything that would make the skybox disappear? (Will the skybox ever disappear on its own? Could someone just "Right-Click" and choose "Return" to get rid of my skybox?)
Hopefully someone can answer those questions for me, because I am especially interested in building a large skybox for a home, but I wanted to make sure that it won't just disappear.
Thanks for everything guys!!!!

Ownership of land dictates absolutely all airspace within the parcel boundaries, which includes up to the 768m rez limit (there's probably a hard limit, but at that point it doesn't matter).
You can't build a skybox on land that's not yours either by purchase or rental. Technically if someone's parcel allows building, you can put your box there, but you're taking away their prims and occupying their airspace, and indeed the owner has the option to get rid of all of your objects (and please, please, please don't fall into the trap of thinking it's okay to "live" in a sandbox, either).
This is how SL works whether you like it or not, unfortunately. If you want a place to call your own, you have to shell out for it like the rest of us. There are options for renting land that don't involve Linden tier payments, so look around for information on that and see if you can find something within your price range.

Having to pay for land (i.e. a monthly fee) is manageable, though I wasnt sure if it was required.
Other question, what if I was to build BEYOND 768 meters? What happens? If I understand my reading, anything beyond 768 meters that isnt attached to a character disappears rather quickly, is that correct? (I think thats how the skydiving system works too, the launcher is attached to you untill you let go, then it disappears)

From: PK Graves Other question, what if I was to build BEYOND 768 meters? You can't "build" above 768m. You can't set a prim's location higher than that altitude (not counting child prims within link distance above a parent prim at 768m). The only way to get a prim higher is to apply force through the physics engine, so your skybox would have to "hover" actively, rather than just existing at a specified position in space.

In all honesty, if you want some of the niftier effects of a skybuild, going to max height eliminates some and creates others. I prefer to start a skybuild around 250-350m off the ground and then build up...terraces and patios are very spiffy at that height and if the lower levels give a blurry view of the ground, that's even nifter.

My av had some serious trouble sitting down (ie - it couldnt....). Unless there are some tricks, I suspect that nothing will function properly above 768m.

Nothing works normally above 768 meters. You can't move furniture or do most normal activities. Yet even up there, whoever is below you DOES own that airspace. If you somehow manage to put prims above my land at 1000 M, for example, they still consume the resources I am paying for, and I can, and will, return them aburptly as soon as they are detected. It would also be a likely reason to get an abuse report thrown at you, and to get you banned from that parcel for being a squatter and a prim thief.
Sky builds follow precisely the same rules as any other building in SL. You must own enough land to cover the required prim count. For example, owning 1024 M2 allows you 234 prims to use as you see fit. And your build MUST remain within the vertical column defined by the borders of your property. Encroaching on your neighbors land is the same as being a squatter and not paying for land at all - you steal their resources and can get abuse reported.
It doesn't matter if it's mainland property or a private island. When you buy land, you own the airspace above it, to infinity, and no one may place prims in that space without your permission.
