Hello people.
Can anyone give some tips about importing 3d objects into SL or any other info about Rhino and Second Life?

Thank you!

RE: Rhino or other external modelling tools

I think there you would need to limit your Rhino modeling to using prims similar to those used in SL, then write some kind of script in rhino to export those prims and locations and another script in SL to import/re-create those prims as an object.

I don't know. I saw some type of tool that did this in Autocad and that's how it worked.

I was actually thinking of writing an external modeling tool with more traditional modeling tools and a 'smart' converter that would convert the mesh or nurbs object into the minimal number of SL prims possible, then generating an SL script that would build the object in SL.

I'm still working on understanding how I'm going to programattically determine the best prims, trims and sculps.

Hmm...last time I used Rhino (in the late 90's), it was a totally NURBS based 3D application. Can you import NURBS into SL? Is Rhino a valid export option? I don't know. I wouldn't think so...

If you are going to use a program like Rhino...you might as well switch to BLENDER (which DOES have very valid export options). IMHO.

You know, I started searching and found this on the wiki:

https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Sculpted_Prims:_3d_Software_Guide

scroll down the page and look for Rhino3D.

I looks l like you can try 3DMtoSculpt. I'll give that a shot on one of my car designs tonight and let you know how it worked out.

BTW, Rhino has come a long way since the late 90s. Version 3 and now Version 4 have ton's of export options and new tools like tsplines, etc.

Plus, it's quite a bit easier to learn than Blender (not that I'm dissin' Blender. Been a Blender user for many, many years. In fact, Twingy and myself are the ones who spun off the Nurbana project, which Twingy later donated back to the Blender community.

Thanks unique, at least i´m going forward on this. The wiki help was very useful, and i´ll try the 3DMtoSculpt and see what happens.
Actually i´m used to work with nurbs instead of primitives, altough i used 3dmax a couple of times but never got into it, and i don´t want to start a new way of design, because i´ve used rhino for many years and i love it...
Please let me know if you find something else about this subject, and i´ll keep looking for more info or previous experiences on the web.
Thanks Again.
Manuel.

I've tried the 3dm2sculpt with Rhino files but the program refuses to work for me. I keep getting error messages that say the program is configured incorrectly. Since there really isn't any configuration on my part I can't figure this out.
Anyone else having trouble like this?
