Hey what's up,

I've been in progress with buillding and I wanted to know if I could like lock a chat in different rooms. Like for example, in the main room everyone can hear eachother talk but once they step into the VIP area there is a chat barrier that only they can get.

Thanks for the help,

I have been wondering this myself.

I have seen something on SLex that seemed to be saying it does *something* like that, but the explanation in the listing is rambling and makes zero sense to me. Why don't you buy it first and tell me if it works?

I believe it works by listening to channel 1 and retransmitting as an im to folks who have clicked on it. I don't see the point for use between two ppl as you could just as easily set up an im conversation between two people.

However, with more than two av's it would echo anything you say on channel 1 as an im to the others. At least that is what I think it does.

Still easier to set up a skybox 300 m up with a radar intruder detection system and chat away to your heart's content!

Wouldnt it be possible to permanently change your chat comments to a different channel without using the prefix every time you type something ? So you could send someone an IM with the channel you two will use and then both people can set their chats to that channel permanently without anyone being able to listen in who is not on that channel.

It seems that we already have a group im feature where we just select any number of notecards, and im all on selected av's. Not sure whether their replies would reach all av's you had selected, but someone might want to comment on this?

hmmm... true.

However, i dont much like the IM box because of its colors and less options. I prefer normal chat and hoped that it could somehow be made private within my own 4 - rented - walls.

Well...outside of IM's...nothing is private in this game. I don't care what channel you talk on, what land access rights, etc...there are ways that are readily available to any interested party that would allow them to overhear what you say.

There is no way to actually block your text from a Say from being heard by anyone or anything within range of the text.

300m skybox? I'll just disable my camera constraints...zoom all the way up there (or just fly as close as I can)and drop a prim tortured so small it's practically non-existant with a script in it to do whatever I want. Even if you had the view transparent option on you'd never see the prim unless you knew exactly where it was placed.

Now I would never do these things, but I'm just letting you know that these are easily possible and just about anyone would have access to the tools to accomplish it if they looked hard enough. There are other ways to protect yourself, but ya know..my general rule of thumb is, if I don't want someone other than the person I'm talking to hearing what I say...then I'm going to IM them...that is what it is for. Either that or I will get them on some kind of voice comm.

Obviously I'm not saying that if you could have a 'sound-proof box' that this would be a bad thing....but the only thing close that I would see as feasible would be to make it where a restricted parcel blocked all chat from leaving that parcel. Personally I think there's way too many banned parcels as it is though...especially on sim borders which are the bane to any vehicle pilot.

Privacy only exists in SL on a private island, when you own the whole sim and restrict all access to the entire sim only to your trusted friends. Nothing short of that is truly effective.

IM Chat Conferencing will be easy as pie in the new update, being released today. Multi-select on your friends, list, and start a group IM from there. No need for gadgets.

IM messaging still is private. Any other method can be listened to, if the peeping tom is sufficently determined to do so.

Of course, everyone determined enough can find out my shoesize and what videos i rent. I dont care about those - I'm not a worhty enough target. I am thinking about the "casual listener", the guy in the next apparment who just wants a quiet evening while i have a fight with two of my buddies.

By using IM's between yourself and your friends, you can prevent anyone else from overhearing you. Conferencing (using calling cards in a folder or the new feature in Friends) will allow you to have a private IM conversation with a small group of people, all at once.

There is absolutely nothing you can do to prevent yourself from initially hearing someone who happens to appear nearby and start talking in open Chat. You can individually mute them in Chat, but you can't "close the door and be unable to hear what is outside".

Is there a command that lets me talk and listen to a specific channel other than the default one ?

Not directly, no. You can talk on any channel you please, by typing a backslash and the channel number before the chat text.

/157Hi There!

The above line, typed in Chat, will be heard as "Hi There!" only on channel 157, by scripted itens within chat range that are listening to that channel.

But for you to hear what is being said on a specific channel, you pretty much need a scripted gadget to listen on that channel and IM what it hears to you.

Honestly, IM conferencing is MUCH simpler to do!
