Why Why Does It Keep Rubber Banding Back and Forth?

For the last 3 days or so, whenever I use the edit tools to position a prim, the prim wants to rubber band back and forth, even after I close out the edit box. It just keeps moving all over the derned place and I'm not even touching anything? Anyone have any idea if this some odd setting, lag, or an issue w/ my computer?

Its making me CRAZY! I can't build anything if I can't line anything up because they seem to have a mind of thier own.

Sounds like packetloss.

Is the left bar on the upper right hand of your side filled any? That's the packetloss meter.

no, its empty.

to add to my dismay, last night i tried to texture a large linked item and i'd select blank for the texture, the whole thing would turn white for a moment and then like crazy voodoo magic, all of the linked pieces just started randomly changing textures and colors so in the end a staircase that i wanted to be white had about 15 different colors and textures on it. and not just from one prim to the next. somehow managed to get into the "select texture" and actually put different textures on all sides of some of the prims. and this is while my hands were completely off the keyboard and mouse but i will admit i was swearing like a sailor.

this happens to me all the time, I end up with my prims dozens and dozens of meters away (or lost for god knows how long). The only thing I can do is get at a different angle which is a pain....

i get this at times, what usually works for me is when i stretch it, get it to where you want it and continue to hold down the mouse button for a few more seconds, instead of just dragging and letting go, this seems like something that would happen from packet loss, but my packet loss bar stays at 0% when im building on my land... just some kind of bug i guess

I was able to consistantly reproduce this 'rubberbanding' behavior the other night (I had never seen it before).

I had 0% packet loss (DOWNLOAD from SL).

I had an UPLOAD going on from another PC through my cablemodem at the time though.

It appears to be an issue related to getting information from the client back to the server.

As soon as the upload completed, things went back to normal instantly.

Download was unaffected as the cablemodem only throttles upload speeds... The incomming channel on my modem was wide open for incomming packets from SL.

Perhaps if this is happening to you a lot, you need to look into what your true upload bandwidth limit is and with who or what you may be competing for bandwith. That may help you resolve the issue. Download speed doesn't seem to affect this problem.

I could be wrong as well ;) Anyone else able to confirm my results?

I've had the same problem and I doubt it's packetloss. The other night I tried to texture a couch and it kept changing back and forth between textures. It was pretty comical to watch, the textures kept kaleidoscoping all over the damn couch long after I stopped trying to use the texturing window. Closing the texture selection window stopped the kaleidoscoping immediately.

I also get that "rubberbanding" business where you move a prim and then a moment later SL moves it back to some point between where it was originally and where it should be. I have also noticed that sometimes if I manually type in prim coordinates, the XYZ handle thingy will move to the correct location, but the prim visually appears not to have moved.

Something tells me it's either an issue with the undo queue or some uncompensated-for time lag between the tool sending information to the server and the server sending the resulting update to the client. These things commonly happen without any apparent packetloss in sims that aren't particularly "busy."

I've had that thing since... Beta! LOL!
No, I'm serious. I get that a lot and have always experienced it.
It seems that SL has some sort of timeout, after which the client ignores the position where you told it to put the prim, and refreshes your view with the server copy.
I usually start noticing this when my ping starts raising above 500ms.

I got the "kaleidoscope couch" thing today when my ping was under 100ms.

to me, it happens only when i'm doing a very large build...and forget that i have to move that toon figure/avatar...closer to the prim... ie, try moving closer to your build..:)

I have had great success with some simple 10x10x10 blocks this morning because I set my draw distance and most graphics settings way back i think, had no rubberbanding or lag or glitches moving max sized blocks standing next to them, if that's any help!
