Is there a way of doing this?
When you have an object containing so many prims, and you have to unlink them to adjust something, and afterwards you need to reselect everything in the object set so you can re-link them.

Click and hold your mouse button *outside* of all the objects and drag a box around them all.
They will now all be selected and you should be able to relink the whole sheebang in one swift move.

You can also hold down ctrl while selecting prims to select multiple ones if you don't want all the prims in the drag box.

Check with Maxx Monde if you see him around. I'm pretty sure he knows a thing or two about selecting large numbers of prims.

if you just need to ajust a few prims in a linked object you can use edit linked parts, select the ones you need to work with and unlink just those peices from the object

"Debug>Rendering>Hide Selected Objects" is your friend. After you've selected a bunch of prims via drag select, control select, or some combination of the two, it might not be obvious if you have it all. Turn on Hide Selected Objects. Everything that you've selected will disappear and if there's something you failed to select it will be sitting there all by itself waiting for you to add it to the selection. Since I just said it in another thread, it's fresh on my mind.

When trying to select an entire build that is sprawling or taking up alot of area, don't forget that you can fly your avi higher to get it all in your view to select it all in one swoop. i used to think i couldn't zoom out enough to get it all in. At the right altitude you can select almost a 1/4 sim at once ~Lefty

From: Lefty Belvedere i used to think i couldn't zoom out enough to get it all in. At the right altitude you can select almost a 1/4 sim at once It's a good technique, but it's not perfect. I don't know why, but LL has put in some kind of distance restriction on selection. I think, if you can see something, you should be able to edit it, especially if it's in the same sim. But that's not always the case. And if your build includes Linden trees, you can't select them with the drag select. It doesn't affect many people, but it's really irritating to the ones it does affect. There should at least be an option to select prims and trees. And when you're at a distance from the build, small individual prims will not render and thus can't be selected. Not a big problem, but something to be aware of. Link the smaller prims with a larger prim to take care of this. But in general, this technique is incredibly useful.

there is certainly a distance limit. I agree with your comment about what-you-see-is-what-you-edit. There must be a reason why they can't extend the edit distance to an entire sim. I can't think of one right now. Maybe it curves the amount of random crap you'd select way back there in the fog when not in "Select Only My Objects" mode. I already catch myself selecting prims from my neighbors house across the pond. Oh how i wish i owned everything on my plot!
