How to make 3d letters / numbers?

Hey all, im just wondering if there is an easy way to make 3D Letters / Numbers? I have tried to make different shapes and link them together but this is an extremely time consuming thing. Are there any pre made packs out there or any tips on how to do this?

For quirky, plump sculpty letters PloppSL might be useful (G'al knows it isn't useful for much else). I just made an "A," and it worked ok.
