Putting together prefab house-- how to select mutiple parts to link?

This is probably a simple question (building 101), but I can't find the menu or key-combo to select multiple pieces to link (while leaving others unlinked) in a prefab house I am tossing up.

I can't surround-select because it selects items I don't want to link together.

It's probably staring me right in the face, but I can't find how to do this...

Any help is appreciated :)

Thanks mucho, now I don't have to worry about accidentally tearing my house apart while orienting it :)

I normally do the 'drag select' and then shift click to de-select the things I don't want, like the water plane in the bathtub that needs to remain seperate so it can be phantom.
