Have these been built yet, and if not, why not ? I doubt I will ever get to Giza in the RL so I would love to see them somewhere in SL.

Most large scale builds are limited by the realities of prim count and land prices.
The base of the Great Pyramid is 230 Meters on a side. An entire sim is only 256 Meters on a side. Therefore this project would take an entire sim, just for the Great Pyramid, let alone the smaller nearby pyramids and the Sphinx.
Being limited to prims that are no more than 10 Meters in any one dimension, making a pyramid that is 230 meters on a side would take a heck of a lot of prims. Probably at least 800 to 1000 prims just to make a 4-sided shell, smooth and relying entirely on textures to make it look right. Then again, you get 15,000 prims in a sim, so since it takes most of the sim anyway, that's not too much of an issue.
I recently did the research to try to re-create the Flavian Ampitheatre (The Roman Coluseum). It's footprint, including the paved courtyard that originally surrounded it, is almost as big as an entire sim. I figure I could do it by splitting the thing over two sims, and in the process double the seating capacity to a whopping 80 avatars, for an edifice that should hold 10,000. *sigh*
Bottom line: Projects on this scale eat entire sims. Someone has to pay for that sim and has to pay to maintain it. Know any rich folks looking for a tax writeoff?

What about making them scale to the smallest avatar you can have? If you could get yourself half or quarter size, then do the same to the pyramid. And the texture would be simple - just a 128x128 pair of stones, set to repeat.

The idea of building the Great Pyramid on the donation of land and fees by someone is interesting. Im not sure how you could write it off however, but Im not an accountant or tax professional.
I have tried to find a way to give back to the SL community. I have been doing very well for myself since I discovered SL about 2 months ago and it dosent feel right not to till some of that back into the experience. The Brogla Public garden is my current community project. Almost a half Sim ( would be fully 1/2 sim except for 1 512 thats not available) public space on the mainland where people can go to get away from the hodgepodge of structures and ban lines, and folks that cannot afford to own a McMansion can go. I hope it is well received. (currently being reconstructed/reconfigured due to the aquisition of an additional 5000m across the road)
To build a Giza set of islands is very cool, I cant help but think that that $ could go to improving the SL personal existence of people instead of a novelty fly-by . But thats what makes SL so wonderful..you can do what ever you want.

Build them from giant prims across a set of void sims.
What would you be willing to pay to rent 4 void sims for, say, 3 months?
