I'm going to be installing GMAX on my machine. What kind of exporter do I need to turn the stuff I create from native GMAX format into something I can upload onto the grid, and what kind of file would it be turned into?

I can't recall, but I think Gmax can only save/export to it's own unique file format, can't it?

If that's the case, you'd need something that can convert that into a sculpt map, or a converter from that to either .obj or .3dm would work too (Obj2Sculpt and 3dm2Sculpt)

That's about all I can give.. my computer isn't liking google atm so i can't check things properly, sorry.

Gmax? That's going back a few years. I think the last time it was in common use was maybe 2002 or so. It was canceled in 2005, in case you didn't know.

It's highly unlikely you'd be able to Gmax directly for anything SL-related. As I recall, it doesn't have a renderer, so baking textures with it is out. And it's a safe bet there's no way anyone is going to write an SL-prims plugin or a sculpty exporter for it, so modeling is pretty much a no go as well. It's possible you could do as Keira suggested, and use Gmax to createa source model for a sculpty, and then export it to a different program to generate a sculpt map from it, but why bother? It would be far more efficient just to use the other program the whole way through, whatever it is.

If you're looking for a free program that actually would be up to date and useful for SL, I'd suggest Blender or Wings.
