Is there an alternative to the ctrl+shift thingy that doesn't move the position of the prim and is convenient?
I use to use the Ctrl+Shift one but now it's been changed and it's put my building career at a complete halt, any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

single prim?
Type sizes into the object tab of the edit window (With more selected) to 'scale' just multiply each value by the scale you want.
Those are the only two ways

Its generally better for individual pieces tho, as its more exact. You could also just write down the X and Y of a linked object, scale it, then put in th X and Y coordinates so its centered where it was before

If I understand the question, checking "stretch both sides" in the edit box will leave the root of the prim in the same place as it was.
