Hi, I just started building so please be kind with my noob questions I am building a shoe atm, with the tips I found here everything worked out fine so far. Thin sole nice heel and so on - but now its time for the thin leather straps -harg I'm trying to build them out of a torus - yesterday I got a nice small on but I cant reproduce it. I attached a picture reference - If you can share your tips on strap creation that would be really great. I know that I got something like an outer Radius and a inner percentage of that one - who came up with that idea? So what I'm looking for is a small/thin pipe but with a large radius to fit as a strap - hopefully that makes any sense Thanks in advance John

My understanding is that torusses (torii?) are pretty processor intensive for the client. I always use cylinder segments, with tapers or skews where needed. I think they look better too. After all, leather straps have a flat cross section.

Many ways to do that .. you can, as the previous poster suggested, use a hollowed & cut cylinder, though I don't think it'll go thin enough. If you use a torus, try the "Advanced cut" (is it still called that? I'm not sure. The second "cut" setting) to strip away the inner half of the torus, leaving a half-moon cross section. Also set "Hole Size Y" to 0.05 to get it thinnest. You could also use the Tube prim, by hollowing it to 80 or more, and again using the "Advanced cut" to cut away the inner or outer half, leaving you with a thin strip of tube.
Or, a totally different method would be to just paint the straps on a texture, with alpha edges, and put that on a cylinder. Of course it won't have the thickness of a real strap but with a foot underneath, it might actually look good enough to fool the casual observer.

You are probably looking for a profile cut of .49, .51.

For something as delicate as that, you may also want to look at the possibility of doing a sole/heel component done with prims, and a strap part done as a sock - textured as a clothing layer item. The major problem with that approach is that it removes the possibility of wearing your choice of stockings with it, and is thus a better choice for enclosed shoes. I know I really do like being able to wear shoes with whatever lingere I happen to want at that time, and I imagine most other female avatars do as well. But you may be able to get past that by also offering several stocking options with the shoe straps as part of the design. An entirely prim design avoids this problem, of course, and can be worn with any stockings.
Good luck, though. You've chosen a challenging project, to duplicate that particular shoe, and I hope it comes out well!

The UV template on the foot is quite a pain to work with, and I doubt the level of detail shown in the original photo would be achievable, with the pixel distortion and general wonkiness of that area.
