Request for Critique!
Hey all. Just getting into the swing of SL. At any rate, I just finished up the protype work on a "social sphere" object. It's not exactly a house, nor an arena....

The idea behind it is a sphere, in the middle of which is either a spokesperson or object. Seating + such exists on both the interior and exterior of the spherical shell, and begins to start a language of introverted/extroverted spaces.

Next up is an exterior protrusion to allow for some movement... dancing, all that madness that works so well in SL.

Anyways, this is my first break at making something that has a familiar function, yet unfamiliar form. Thoughts, critiques, etc are ALL appreciated.

Location: Brauer 45,150
You'll find a little platform @ ground level with an X marking 'the spot'. Stand on the X, and fly directly upward some 120m. The sphere is built as to channel visitors in this way.

Thanks!

Seems to be complicating the issue. Currectly seems to be too much emphasis on form and not enough function. It's just not as easy as meeting up on the floor with a few chairs, esp if its going to be this high, where my AV don't hover.
Another thought is, a big thing for meeting places in SL is being able to leave your camera somewhere and be able to see everyone while you type?

"something that has a familiar function, yet unfamiliar form" Would suggest to me that you want forms that are going to engage the viewer. The shapes you've used are a little pedestrian in the context of SL. Hmm finding it hard to express this... they're easy shapes, they dont challenge me as a builder.

So thats the critical stuff. I like the concept and thing it could be good. A spherical ampitheatre seems like good stuff for SL. With any design try it out is the best way to see what works and what doesnt.

AL,

Yeah, I've been feeling that it needs a little -SOMETHING-. I'm just not sure what. I suppose part of the ease of use could be helped by an increase in scale. But all at the same time, I somewhat enjoy the closeness of the space itself. I guess part of this goes back to the question of scale within virtual environs... mostly as qualitative judgement.

For instance, much of SL feels very large, if not completely outside of scalar reference. The ability to travel unobstructed across vast volumes only aids this. This project, more by accident than design, begins to rub against the other side of scalar debate. Not to say that my sphere is a fix or even a step in the right direction.

Thanks for the crit!
Echs.
