Re-texturing elements of a prefab?

I'm already so sorry because I know this is a stupid newbie question, but I have asked the people I know, looked for help, and asked Live Help if there's an online reference, and they directed me here.

I have a cute prefab house. I want to change the floors, wall colours, etc. I have managed to successfully re-texture the floors from carpet to wood, but when I try to paint a wall white, all of the interior walls, the exterior walls, and the windows all get painted over. I am now living in a big white box with nice wood floors! Arrrgh! :)

I need to learn how to select and texture a single area on a single side, and I just cannot figure it out. Any help, including a link to other posts or online references, would be very appreciated.

Many thanks,
Sabrina

Hi Sabrina.

What you have done is quite common and even the most experienced builders have done this from time to time. I am more than happy to give you a lesson on this topic if you IM me. Scorpio

Ooops.. when i hit the submit i noticed you had got yourself sorted.

is there an easy to explain solution?

Im also currently in a prefab, and would like to change the wallpaper inside the house - without changing the walls.

I know its possible in scripting to control textures on individual sides, but how to do this
when building?

As this seems to be a common problem, is there an way of explaining the solution on the board? Otherwise, expect an IM sometime soon :-)

thanks

I'm glad you asked, Patch. I hate it when people IM answers to questions instead of just answering here. Explaining here benefits all who read. IM's benefit only the person who asked.

Anyway, here's your answer. Right click on a wall and choose Edit. On the editor window, click the radio button for Edit Texture. This will allow you to texture one surface at a time instead of the whole object. Click on a wall surface to select it. Now on the editor click More and go to the Texture tab. Use the picker to apply a texture to the selected surface.

Alternately, you can simply drag a texture out of inventory onto a surface and it will apply directly to that surface instantly. The advantage uf using Select Texture though is that you can select multiple surfaces at once by shift-clicking them and then whatever you do in the texture picker will affect them all. So, for example, if you want to paint 3 of your walls white, but leave the 4rth one as is, simply click on one of them (with Select Texture turned on) and then shift-click the other two. On the texture tab, hit Blank, and presto, all 3 selected walls will turn white.

it's really easy. in the edit tool, select texture and check the "Edit linked Parts" box. now whenever you select something, you'll only be editing the texture of the side you selected.

Edit Linked Parts is unnecessary. As long as Select Texture is turned on, every surface you click on will be selected one at a time. Edit Linked Parts would be used if, say, you want to make one wall smaller to make room for a door. You could resize just the one wall without having to unlink. Also, it could be used if you want to retexture an entire prim without retexturing the whole build, but if all you want to do is retexture one surface individual surface, having Edit Linked Parts on or off won't make any difference.

i run into (sometimes) that the biulder has used script to set repeats and such per side of the prim, last time that happened i reporduced the biulding, the way i wanted it prim by prim.(it has more floorspace and less prims now heh)

The learning experiance was worth the hassle becuase ive never bought pre-fab again :)
