I don't think that there is any way to change the hdivide and vdivide after you've changed the zbrush primitive to a polymesh object. When you press that Make Polymesh3D the zbrush primitive is converted to a more general mesh object and there is no going back.

I assume that you have sculpted an object and now you're having trouble getting it converted to a sculpty because of the number of faces/vertices in your object?

Vlad hum i made a shape in fibermesh to start and export it in zbrush to refine it but yes then i tought that was not the right way to obtain a scultpie in sl cause hdivide and vdivide are not the same as i need :(

It might be possible to sort of convert the shape that you've sculpted into a mesh that is of the proper dimensions to be converted to a sculpty. I think that by using the SubTools Project All feature you can transfer details from one mesh to another. I just don't know enough about these tools. At least not yet. :D

I'm experimenting with the technique, and I'll let you know if I come up with anything. I have already had some limited success with my first few experiments.

I've created a video tutorial that shows how to create sculpties from start to finish using zBrush and a converter by 2K Suisei. You can find it here:

and..there's a way to reduce the faces of a cube for exemple making a easier way to model the shape?by the way i found out how to use the texture :)) to fill the canvas...step by step YAY

hmm not sure what you are asking. You can start with several of the zBrush primitives - sphere, plane, cylinder, even the gear primitive - as long as you make sure to set them to 32x33 faces in the initialize setting.

You can't actually change the number of faces if you are going to use 2k's SculptyMaker converter. Like most sculpty converters it requires a very specific configuration for the object.

I was wondering, how does one take advantage of the other (non-sphere) sculpt shapes using Zbrush. Specifically, what ztools and settings of those ztools would one use to create a cylinder, torus or plane that would be importable to secondlife?

Hi Virrginia. The process is basically the same as starting with the zBrush sphere primitive.

For instance:

+ Select the Plane ztool in zBrush

+ set the Initialize params to 32 for hdivide and 33 for vdivide (for 2ks SculptyMaker converter, might be slightly different for other converters)

+ Draw out the plane and go into edit mode

+ press the MakePolymesh3D button to convert from zBrush primitive to a mesh with proper sculpty UV

+ sculpt your object then export to .OBJ and convert with SculptyMaker

+ upload in SL and apply the sculptmap to an object

+ since this is a Plane based mesh you'll need to change the sculpty type. you can do this in the Edit window in the RC viewer (1.20) or via script in the standard viewer.

I have had success doing this with the plane, cylinder, 'spherinder', and gear zbrush primitives. The torus works as well but requires some manipulation of the sculptmap in Photoshop. It comes out twisted along the z axis, but can be fixed using the Shear plugin in Photoshop.

I especially like the Plane object as it concentrates all the faces of the sculpty on one side of the mesh. more detail, but it is invisible from the other side.

Thank you for about the hundredth time since I started playing with zBrush, Vlad! I'm gathering from what you're saying, I could start with fair much any ztool, so long as I set hdivide and vdivide to 32 and 33?

You're welcome. Yeah, pretty much all of the ztools, although ZSpheres are a special case that won't apply to this technique. I don't think that the 3D Arrow and polymesh tool would work since you can't specific the hdivide and vdivide.

valentine, your initial question sparked an idea and led me down a path of exploration that has yielded some good results. :)

Check out my newest tutorial video where I show how you can convert any object to a sculpted prim using zBrush.

http://www.shiny-life.com/2008/05/08/convert-objects-to-sculpted-prims-with-zbrush/

It's not an exact science but it does work and can yield some very detailed sculpties. I also show how to create a 'baked' shadow/lighting texture to apply to your new sculpty.
