It's really simple:

1. Hollow a sphere to 95%.

2. Put a completely transparent texture on the outside, and put a solid black texture on the inside.

3. Place a slightly smaller sphere inside the first one. The black inside of the larger sphere will appear to be an outline around the smaller sphere. The smaller sphere should have a blank texture on it, and should have Full Bright turned on to prevent 3D shading.

That's all there is to it. It's not limited to spheres, of course. That was just an example. The technique is the same no matter what shape you're using. It's always all about doubling everything. Hollow a large prim, color it black inside and transparent outside, and then put a smaller blank prim of the same type inside.
