Suppose you have a phantom prim attached to your avatar, such that no part of it is actually visible outside your body, is there a way to select and edit it short of detaching it from inventory and dropping it?

Depending on where it is inside your body, you can play with panning the camera very close to yourself, and from certain angles, you end up looking 'inside' the body. Try focusing on an arm, then pan around to the other side of the body. The camera wants to avoid actually being inside you, but sometimes you can fool it. Of course, if your internal prim is invisible, it will be harder to deal with. Keep "Highlight transparent" on, if it is.
I have to do this on occasion when a prim for my Hug or Kiss animators ends up in the wrong spot, or is in conflict with something I want to wear. (Normally I keep those attached to the pectoral attachment points, and hidden in my torso, since the pecs are rarely used.) Also had to do it when I was trying to make prim nipples, and accidentally stuck them inside my torso.
If nothing else works, attach it somewhere else, move it, reattach to the correct point, and adjust it again.

Ctrl-Alt-Shift-4 turns avatar rendering on and off. It's very handy for finding attachments that have wandered inside the body. It's still a little tricky to select them (selection behavior for attachments tends to change a little bit from update to update), but you can usually do it by dragging a selection box. Once you've got the object selected, turn avatar rendering back on, and then move the object to the proper location.

Is there a way to select something and hide it to get at a prim hidden or obscured by another one? For example to acces a prim that is covered lets say by an invisible prim .. ie the heel on a shoe? Other than moving the covering prim?

Dante? Select both prims by doing a drag select, the de-select the one covering the other. You'll then have the inside prim still selected.

The only alternative I knew was to turn on Hide Selected from the Client menu, then select the prim(s) that are in my way before finally selecting the blocked-off prim. On its own this strategy only lets me select one prim (or I suppose in certain cases, one object).
