Oriental Community Proposal
---
Group Name: Yamato
Group Introduction
---
Yamato is an organization of people dedicated to creating a community based on medieval and mythological Oriental culture.
Yamato members are both sword and sheath. Our pagoda features the words for "warrior" and "fighting spirit", but we place more value in the words next to them: "friendship" and "respect".
Honor, not pride, is our most valued commodity.

Community Introduction
---
Explore a strange new world within Second Life, untouched by the hands of time and spiced with a decidedly Eastern flavor. Welcome to our world, a world of honorable samurai, shadowy ninjas, and a unique culture, architecture, and artwork that you'll be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. This mystical section of SL is not only ancient, but mythological. You'll hear all sorts of legends of Japanese, Chinese, and other Oriental origin. You'll see martial artists duel in the Lotus Blade tournament, and explore the dangers surrounding this small village. But be warned; once you
enter, you may not wish to return to your prior Second Life...
Community Description
---
Yamato intends to recreate a small Oriental village in a medieval/mythological style. The highlight of the community will the the tall pagoda standing at the height of the village, with its younger twin brothers beside it. A beautiful garden in front of the buildings leads to the Lotus Blade tournament grounds, where people come from the worlds around to compete for glory and honor. You'll be able to observe the houses of our noble samurai, and explore the wonders of our small forested area. The goal of Yamato is to provide a visual experience found nowhere else in Second Life.
Community Features: Terrain
---
If possible, Yamato's community would be slightly secluded from view of the surrounding sims. If building limitations allow; a great wall will be constructed, allowing entrance from the main gate. Community members may fly in, but flying is not allowed within most of Yamato itself.
The community flows slightly uphill, from the gate to the main pagoda. This gives the community a commanding view and skyline from the entrance.
Community Features: Buildings
---
Yamato's community highlight is clearly the Yamato Pagoda, already set up in Perry (50,200). This five-story building is the cultural center of Yamato. The basement features a weapons shop and martial arts practicing area. The ground floor and second floor feature a dazzling array of Oriental artwork. The second floor will also offer various furniture. The third floor will nclude Yamato's various clothing, including kimonos, gis, and other outfits, as well as armor.
The fifth floor is normally closed off, as it is where Yamato's leaders reside and work on their latest creations.
Two smaller pagodas sit will sit beside our main Yamato Pagoda, and will be used for officer housing. Below these pagodas, following a well-lit walkway (see the streetlamp in front of Yamato) and past the tournament and marketplace, sit four small houses for more members of our community. A small bridge lies over a babbling brook, and a overhanging gate stands at Yamato's entrance.
Community Features: Clothing
---
By the time the village is completed, Yamato will boast a wide array of Oriental outfits. From kimonos to karate gis to samurai armor, players will be able to suit themselves up however they please. Most outfits will be designed to allow players to recolor them as they see fit.
Community Features: Items
---
Many people are fascinated with Oriental martial arts and weaponry, and Yamato does not plan to disappoint. various swords, katanas, daikatanas, polearms, etc. will be created for players to try out. Team members are also taking steps to expand on the existing combat scripts, including crafting melee weapons that can actually damage other players.
The Yamato community will also offer furniture, artwork, and other items of interest to other players. We will also offer our smaller buildings for sale to use on players' own property.
Community Features: Events
---
The current highlight of Yamato will be the Lotus Blade tournament. Held periodically, the tournament is a contest of warriors to see who exhibits the most skill, strength, and cunning. In addition to a cash prize, the winner of the Lotus Blade tournament receives a ceremonial blade of the utmost quality, finely crafted and not available for sale or anywhere else. We hope this additional incentive encourages fighters to attend, and hopefully draws crowds as well.
Community Features: Players
---
Yamato hopes to win the hearts of many of the role-players within Second Life. We hope to provide a fascinating environment for players to act out whatever role they wish. Several members have already expressed a desire to portray the Yakuza criminal element, acting as an underground element with the community. With several of our other members portraying more classic-honorable characters, we hope to state some heated conflicts that will be interesting to watch unfold.
Though the initial community does not have as many events (due to the size restrictions), it has a deep theme which will lend itself to many more events given more space.
Exhibits
---
The Yamato Pagoda is already constructed and can be seen in Perry (50,200). Immediately next to the pagoda is a large map detailing the layout of the planned community. East of the building, we have constructed one of our small samurai residences. The pagoda itself has the beginning weapons shop downstairs, and artwork resides on the first and second floors. As a direct result, templates for the vast majority of the Yamato community have already been constructed.
Challenges
---
Many of the risks for Yamato have already been minimized. The buildings for the community have already been constructed; indeed, they are being partially filled already. Finances for the community are always a concern, but three members of Yamato have already raised over $10,000 without any additional fundraising. Given that there will be 10 additional residences within Yamato, we expect more members to join, and several existing members to be willing to pay for housing within such a rich community.
As stated before, the community is more a thing to SEE and EXPERIENCE than it is a thing to DO. It does not feature "rides" or "attractions"; however, rides and attractions can become as boring as a static environment given time. The goal for Yamato, then, is to not be static; to be ever changing through the actions of its community members. Our officers are working together closely both on and off Second Life to breathe as much life and excitement into Yamato as possible. We are confident that our efforts will succeed.
