Combining multiple attachments into one

OK I would like to free up some attachment points on my head. My hair comes as three objects of multiple prims each. I've got them all adjusted just fine and would love to just combine all 3 objects into 1. But I can't figure out a good way to do this. I obviously can't link them together while they are attached. [BTW I get an odd message about me not being the owner of all the objects when I try this, which is weird.] If I drop them the 3 objects wind up at different rotations in different places on the ground, and I can't get them into place very well unless they are on my head so I can see the correct positioning. llGetPos() from objects in attachments returns the location of my avi, so no help there. If I could just get the relative positions of the 3 objects as they sit on my head to each other I could combine them while detached and then position the whole thing later, but I can't figure out a way to get those relative positions while they are attached to my body. To see what I mean, make 2 small cubes, attach one to your head and one to your ear. Now how do you go about linking (while detached, obviously) them in that exact relative position to each other?

Before you say well just link them as close as you can eyeball, then attach it, then edit the separate links and position them, the problem with that is that the 3 objects consist of LOTS of prims each, so once the whole mess is linked into one big object I'd have to position lots of little hair prims individually and the chances of me mucking it all up is about 99%.

Any ideas??

Add a distinctive prim to each section while they're on the ground. Something like a cube with every face a different color, semi-transparent, large enough to make misalignments obvious...

Wear them.

While they're on your head, align the cubes so they're all in EXACTLY the same position and orientation.

Now, rez them on the ground. Line the pieces up so the cubes are again in EXACTLY the same position and orientation. Say, all facing forward in the same position around part of your head...

Now you can link them, because if those cubes are lines up exactly, so is the hair.

Finally, you can remove the cubes and wear your new combined hair.

Another idea that might be simpler... stand on a posing stand, then line them up around your head while you're head's locked in place, without actually attaching them to your head.
