Send me some images or sketches of the dance club that you have in mind; one's that you've visited or seen on tv/movies. Once we have the design concept, I'll charge L$3750/hr ($15/hr). (Neg.)

Totally outrageous

I can't believe the rates Jackson wants, I'd do it for a lot less, hell, especially if the design is given to you, if all you have to do is build from the design it doesn't take any time.

Yeah thats a pretty outrageous rate. This is SL, not the real world.

I was shocked at those prices.

I would do it for a lap dance. lol... But seriously I could do that build, but not the scripts. I am working on a tree house thing for crawford atm. But if you can wait I will be more than happy to do one. I am part of a three company partnership. If you want too see my work check out this thread.

ill upload em today.

Well, there are more important things than just price in a build. Obvioulsy, the quality of the finished product is paramount. But other elements are almost as important in my book; does the builder have a vision for the build; do they understand the functional requirement of the building, not just the visual requirement; can they texture multi-prim objects seamlessly; can they create custom textures and/or basic scripting for specific elements. All of those are important factors for projects beyond a prefab.

If a builder is billing per hour, then they better be quick and you may not get the detailing and custom created textures that can really make a build distintive and fabulous. I prefer to do it by flat fee based on the size of the plot, but that's just me.

I have no connection to or knowledge of the person who posted that rate earlier in this thread, but I will say that the above quote is a strange thing to say given that the time spent is RL time, the skills and talent and training used are RL skills, talent and training.

I would tend to agree with Sabrina and Forseti. There are more important things than just building something from a design (which in fact is harder, since there's something the client can compare your work with) -- things like texturing, space planning, function, camera angles, etc.

But here's the things I would ask someone who's looking to contract a build (especially something that could bring profit like a club) --

How much do you pay each month for tier? And that's just to have blank land, right? And you're looking for something that will a). fit your dream for the site, b). look kickass, c). bring people, and d). be in use for how long?

It doesn't seem unreasonable to expect to pay AT LEAST one month's tier for something you might enjoy for an entire year -- particularly if you're gonna be hanging out there in your sl time -- even moreso if you're planning on making some sort of income from the build, or gonna get mod/copy rights to the build.

Jacksonn obviously thinks that for the client to boss him around and have him do what the client wants rather than what Jacksonn wants with his free time is worth 15usd an hour. Just because some of the rest of you don't value your free time the way he does doesn't mean he's charging outrageous prices -- it just means you're okay with giving away your free time for little to nothing.

All that said -- Jacksonn sure is new to be charging that rate. I'm thinking alt who knows what he's worth.

Did you find you land yet? Curious where.

You should contact Thunder Lardner, or Dix Donovan.. they both build very well; are prim conscious, honorable, and reasonable.

That's like $13/hour. A pittance for someone who knows what they're doing. That is definitely not a real life rate.

In my opinion this Jackson fellow is bang on the money. I sell a fair amount of prefabs every week and am constantly being asked to do custom builds for people or even to alter my prefabs to their specifications and I generally tell them the same thing. I build prefabs in SL because I enjoy it and its a hobby. I design what I want, build what I want, and on my own schedule. If somebody contracts me to do a custom build, I am then obligated to build to other peoples specifications, and need to put in a certain amount of hours per day to get the job done in time. This to me equals work rather than play so I generally quote people around £10 / $20 (USD) per hour for a custom build. Needless to say i've not done any custom jobs yet which suits me fine. I think you just need to draw a line between what is recreation and what is work and pay people accordingly for their time. I would however never put a bid in like that on an open request for a builder. I only respond to personal requests and I figure one day someone will be stupid enough to pay it. You cant blame a guy for trying!

You aren't kidding about other people's specifications either... phew!

There is nothing more frustrating that getting halfway through a build, and have the client pop in say something like "I changed my mind on the second floor's plan... I want this. Same price, right?"

There seems to be a sense of entitlement from some that simply because SL isn't RL, my time is worth less. Well, I'll tell you what... it's worth something to me!

:D

Not happy about Linden Labs purchase of XStreet (formerly SLX) and OnRez. Will this mean LL will ban resident run online shoping outlets in favor of their own?

There is a reason I only do custom builds for fun, not money. As soon as you take money the customer gets way more demanding and unreasonable, so to make it worthwhile I'l need to charge enough to justify working likea job and not a relaxing hobby. Given this, I don't think Jacksonn's rate is unreasonable.
