Vision: To provide an area devoted exclusively to the development of scripts and scripters. The community will be a place for experimentation and sharing of knowledge regarding scripting.
Community Guidelines: Experienced or just starting out, anyone and everyone who is interested in scripting and wants to experiment in an ideal environment is encouraged to join. The main guideline will be:
***Absolutely nothing will be created or maintained in the community that is not being used for experimentation or teaching purposes. This means that there will be no buildings unless the structure is necessary for your experiment. This also means that no scripts will be kept running unattended in the community unless it has been approved. (the purpose is to minimize lag and maximize the resources available)***
Issues to be decided by the community include: <>Community decision process<> Ideally I would like a group of knowledgeable scripters to be the authorities who can approve or disapprove of certain activities in the community. Another possibility would be to have a voting system for all members to have a say on what can go on. <>Privacy<> Some people might like the idea of having a sim devoted to script development, but may not want to be constantly barraged with questions all the time, or be distracted by neighbors talking. For that we should decide how best to respect each others privacy and space. <>Class and event hosting<> We might be able to provide a gathering place for regular scripting classes and demonstrations, free or for a fee, for those who would like to teach there. The area, assuming we can successfully minimize lag, might also become an ideal place to host server intensive events, much like Rizal. Scheduling of these events should be up to the community. <>Guests<> I would like to allow everyone to use the community as a place to experiment, member or non-member, provided that they follow the main guideline above, and are respectful. But, on the other hand we may feel that we should be exclusive because we, after all, will be paying for the land and want to keep lag to a minimum.
To those of you who spend a lot of time messing around with scripts, I think we may like to have an area where we can work on some of our scripts alone or in a group, and where we don't have to worry about lag, or people killing the server. Obviously this community would really work best if we could get an entire sim devoted to us. Also it would be great if some experienced scripters would join and help lead the community. We need at least 5 supporters to get started and help plan. So please, if you'd like to move your experiments to an area that is used exclusively for that purpose, join me in creating SL's first community of scripters.
If you’re interested please respond to this thread or contact me in-world.

I'd like to learn
06-02-2003 22:34
I would love to learn how to script but it seems the help file assumes you have some sort of programming knowledge, and I am not always on for the scripting 101 class. If you need support to get this group going let me know and you can count me but I can't really contribute much as I am clueless when it comes to scripting but I really want to learn.

I would like to help how I can, with the donations of scripts, teaching time, whatever. I really like the idea of a land for building scripts with ultra low lag as the goal. However as everyone is probably aware, I am deeply involved in the Darkwood project. And we are only allowed to buy land for 1 project (an extremely silly restriction - I know of 4 already active themes (just as a base, not counting all the others like this which are great ideas) each trying to get the 16 people to buy a whole sim and no one I have talked to can think of 32 people with enough resources, much less the 64 needed for all four themes.....and all these others? ack I ranted). If I could partake in more than one theme I would help. As it is I will help how I can - scripts and services. :/ Good luck.

cool so it looks like we've got Jon and Bob interested, and thanks for the support Ama. again this would really be best if we could manage to get a whole sim. So if you're interested in having a good place to work on your scripts please join.

I'm getting invlovled with the Air Ship Project otherwise I would jump at this. Though I'm not as good a scripter as many of you I'd like to offer my support as well, scripts, teaching the basics, etc.

Well I have absolutly no scripting skills and I am currently under the wing of the Underwater Community Project, but I still think this is a great idea seeing as how lag is a serrious deturent to script writing... Good luck ladies'n'Fellas

I'm interested, but I should say up front that I don't think I can contribute monetarily. I've never had more than L$3600 in my account; my stipend just about covers my taxes.
I do wonder, how would SL Laboratories' taxes be paid? I'm presuming that with other communities, people will be voting for buildings they admire, buying things, etc. But SL Laboratories won't exactly be a tourist attraction, since there won't be anything persistent there to see. And just how much information sharing will go on? Will scripts be available for sale there, or given away freely?

well information sharing IMO is a touchy subject because some of us may want to protect and sell some of our scripts but it certainly will be a place to share and learn from free ones as well. so the answer is, i look forward to both private and public development happening there. and about the taxes, ya know i hadn't event considered that. uh, maybe we can set up a vote farm hehe j/k. i'm sure it wouldn't look right if we had vote booths without structures. i guess thats another issue we could figure out. class and event hosting could probly be a big part of the income. and private works developed there should also make some money for members. altogether, though, i want it to be a place for working, learning and sharing ideas in a minimally laggy environment. we can leave the actual products to be used in the rest of the world. so, if I can count you in Jake it looks like we have 3 supporters. including me thats 4. unfortunately the deadline i believe is tommorrow. fault me for coming up with this idea late. we need way more people that are willing to buy land. if somehow we come up with enough people we can have our own clean sim to work and learn in. once again if anyone is interested, please respond.

Actually, the deadline is the 12th. Enrollment into the groups for the purchase of new land is supposed to start on the 4th. The proposal has to be submitted (which you have already done) by the 4th. Info is hereBTW, I would like to say that I really like the idea for your settlement. If your group and the Airship Guild or Kazenojin ("People of the Wind" names in debate but sounds cool huh? ) do get enough members. I would like to say that our guild and myself personally would enjoy working toghether with you to produce scripts that are smoother and better built for the experience of everyone.

lmao Chip no no, i still believe that sharing is ideal. i plan to share a lot if this community gets going. but greed is still a reality, and i don't want to turn any one off who doesn't want to share. i was thinking of making a 'Library' area of the community where we could keep useful code like global functions etc, and leave them there for anyone to browse and use. anyway, this community STILL needs more potential land buyers. every little bit will help. so please join if you're interested.

I'd be very interested in contributing to this community. I can even bring a little (though not terribly much) financial assistance to the table.

Xan, Chris, Jake, Bob and Jon, I'm very sorry to let everyone down, but I'm not going to continue leading this project. I'm going to be joining Candie Apples proposed amusement park project. I'm very excited by her proposal and this is why I've decided not to continue to organize this scripting community. I still would love to be a part of this community, if someone else would take the lead for me. Unfortunately I can only count towards one community and I'm choosing to switch over to the amusement park.
BTW the amusement park will offer a lot of fun scripting work, so if you're interested in doing some fun creative stuff, even if you're just learning, it may be a good idea for some of you to join as well. It's the reason why I am joining.
Again I'm sorry for not going through with this. As always I will help anyone who has questions. If someone else will take over the lead of this community I will most certainly be a part of it. Let me know.
