Has anybody tried either of these programs to create sculpt prims for Second Life, and which one is better? Also which program is best for rendering realistic baked textures for use on sculpt prims? Does Zbrush allow different baking effects, such as glossy, metallic, and such?

ZBrush is better for modeling organic and symmetrical stuff.
Lightwave has a proper renderer and so will naturally be better for texture baking. I've never tried it though.
ZBrush's texture baking is very awkward because it involves something called the Projection Master. It's tolerable for single objects, but if you want to make a model from several sculpties then the Projection Master could send you crazy.
If organic modeling is your thing then I would recommend ZBrush for modeling and a different program for baking the textures.
Maya would be a nice option for texture baking because it also has a great sculpty convertor. and the convertor is able to handle the texture baking process for you.
