hi i want to build a longboat. i have only seen one in game and it was just a picture.i have also made maybe 12 or more diffent attempt and have trashed all of them the sides or bow just don't line up right. has anybody tried to do this and how do you make it look well ? and still be under the 32 prim limit for phyical objects? would you use lapstrake for real and if so how is the best way to line up the side boards so they look smooth

Good luck!
aligning parallel plancks on a curved prims is notoriously difficult in the best of cases.

By the looks of it, nobody has tried it before, so you are on your own. Why not try both of your ideas and see which one looks best?

I'm not quite getting the question... but if you're talking about building the shape of the hull.. try using hollowed/dimpled/cut spheres and adding a plank texture, rotated to the right angle?? then use a cylinder, cut and hollowed to make the center plank that runs along the middle...

just thinking in my head.. haven't tried it to check for validity...

I think planks is best, as the boats wer not completely smooth sided, there was some unevenness where the planks met, so it should be OK without being exact in the placement, just pretty close

You're right...but... they want to keep it vehicle capable.. if they use individual planks, then that's gunna use quite a few prims right there - forget detailing...

well using the planking method you can make a plank have 2-3 bourds on it and still get the lapstike illision and not have alot of prims at the same time well save on prims hoping to use a weadge shape and the perfect texture for the drgon head so i get that in one

I would not use individual planks, not only because of the prim over head, but if you do it in texture, you'll be able to shadow the lapstrake and end up with a much more pleasing look. It is also much easier to get a seamless flow of the texture lining up from prim to prim, bow to stern, than it is to try and align prim planking.

There is a viking boat in Valhalla, a Gor sim. I have not looked at it in detail, but it looks relatively authentic from a brief casual inspection.
