hey again
i need to build a sort of cylinder that has a base radius of 17.5m, a top radius of 8.5m and has to be 165meters high.
are there any methods of doing this?
any script maybe even?
thanks
Danny

You can use Cadroe Murphy's ShapeGen.

ShapeGen will certainly get you close. The .95 version did not handle tilted walls very well, but there is a new version...maybe it is better.
You could also tackle this as a math problem, and then write a simple script. I like fooling around. If you IM me when I am in world, I will come to your land and see if I can get ShapeGen to do what you need. regards, lee.ponzu@yahoo.com btw, it will be a lot of prims... |

ShapeGen will help, but there's still going to be some work involved to get those speficic dimensions. I can tell you the tilt parameter you'd need is 86.87 degrees, because that's the angle of the side of the cone you described (unless I made a mistake; tangent = opp/adj). It's going to take 16+ layers of 10 meter prims to make something 165 meters tall, one way or the other.
I was curious what would be involved in using ShapeGen to do this, so I did an experiment in-world. Personally, the way I'd do it is set the tilt to 86.87, then create a base layer that was the right radius. Then I'd manually adjust the radius and height of each new layer by eyeballing it. Tedious, but predictable. But someone else might have a better way. I attached a pic of the scale version I made, at a height of 16.5 meters, using this technique. Lee, I'll drop a new version of ShapeGen on you, I think it does do better at tilted walls when you use the outer alignment (like in the attached pic). _____________________

Yes, the problem had to do with outer versus inner radius. I am looking at the new version now.
The way your did it is the same as what I thought. So sometimes great minds even think like mine. ![]() |

Question for Danny
04-27-2007 11:17
How smooth? Each layer will be some number of big squares, and the more the smoother. But too many is too many prims.
are the radius values inside, outside, or other? and how thick should the wall be? |

I did the rest of the math. Here is a prototype of the first three layers, 12 sided.
14 more layers and we will be at 165 meters, exaclty/mod rounding error |

if people want to see what ive made 100% by hand and calculator (no scripts) you can visit the construction site at: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Somerset%20North/116/99/310
i got something of lee im gonna see what it is right now ![]() the person who gave me the task says she wants it round.. but thats not realy posible ahwel i just got in touch with her in IM and it HAS TO BE ROUND! ![]() she talks about using cylinders. can anyone confirm that it looks more round when using flat prims then with using curved prims forming a circle? |

It can't be round.
What is her max number of prims? If it is *really* large, then it can be roundish... Also, the texture would help. That is, if the texture is a picture of something curved, and they align well, then that will help the illusion...like a picture of a full book shelf on a flat board looks like books... What I sent Danny in SL is the white tower base prototype from the photo above... |
