Is there some way to select more than a single Linden tree/plant at one time, in order to delete them? I like using a lot of them, but it's very tedious to have to select and delete them singly.

Shift-clicking (and I think also drag-selecting) should work to select multiple plants/trees. Then you can point at one and indicate you want to delete it, and they will all delete. I know shift-clicking works...

Oops, I should have said, "Is there a way to easily select lots of Linden trees/plants without using shift-click?" Thank you very much for your response, though! I often use hundreds of these for versimilitude and lassoing them doesn't seem to work, leaving me to select and delete them individually when it's time to clean up.

You might try editing one of the tree/plants then press and hold the shift key, then drag your mouse across the others prims (that's called drag selecting - what Ceera said) that you want to select. They should all become highlighted yellow, then press the keyboard delete key. I use that for other prims, and it should work for trees/plants too. It also comes in handy for selecting everything you want to link (That is, if the link order isn't important. )

Unfortunately, when you select multiple Linden plants, you don't see any highlighting on the individual plants that have been selected. That is a real pain. The edit window can tell you how many objects are selected, however.
What I really hate is trying to transfer ownership of lots of plants that have been placed by someone other than the land owner. You have to set each one for sale individually and the client has to click each one and buy each one individually. There is no way to group them or to sell them as a unit.

If you control the land, then what about subdividing the land, and returning the objects on the part you want to clear, and then rejoining it? Of course if you have anything other than the Linden plants, or only wanted to get rid of some of the Linden plants, that could make it difficult.
If you know you're going to be doing it, you can have different avatars place permanent and temporary objects, and then return only one avatars objects.

Not only that if you have rights to return those plants you can delete them as well and find lost pants using the land tools

I agree it's really annoying that plants can't be drag-selected. It causes no end of headaches when building for a client who wants full ownership of the end product. Lindens, how about an "include plants in mass selections" toggle on the Tools menu?
