Questions about building anthro avatars - Eyes, etc.

I've embarked on the mysteries of anthro avatar creation. It's an interesting -- sometimes grueling -- process of creative and technical discovery. It's harder than I thought it'd be, and very time-consuming, but wow...it's been really gratifying to see my first anthro avatar come together so spectacularly. It just needs a couple other tweaks and I can start on the next breed!

Specifically, I'm looking for information on how to do color-changing eyes. I'm using the method of having the eyeblink animation built into the head-texture, so I'm assuming I'll have to make texture duplicates with just the eyes colored differently in each one...but how to switch between them on the fly the way I've seen them work in other well-known avatars?

For that matter, is there some kind of toolkit...or hidden resource out there somewhere which I haven't found yet...which has basic tools and scripts (show/hide, eye blink, texture switcher using channel commands, and so on) for the specific needs of anthro avatar builders? I would rather not have to reinvent the wheel (i.e. get someone to script it up for me!) if it already exists somewhere out there!

Any help is appreciated!

EDIT:
Ah, didn't note the part about building this into the prim texture. I know some AV-makers just bundle a bunch of different eye textures in, that'd certainly be the easy way, and it'd prevent needing mod permissions.

I don't know of any color-changing widgets specifically for eyes, but color-on-command scripting may be difficult or impossible to use here, without affecting the coloration on the entire head texture.

You would want to script a texture change for the prim with the eye texture on it, using the UUID key of the desired textures. The animation settings would remain the same. You'd just change the key of the texture for the surface of the prim.

Thanks for the input, you guys. I may one day play around with prim eyes instead of texture animated to see what kinds of results I get with that. There is apparently a way to script infinitely color-changeable eyes.

Ceera, thank you for mentioning the UUID thing about the textures. So that's how it's done. Okay. :) Then it seems my problems boil down to scripting yet again; time to see if I can scare up a script that does this, or con someone I know into making it for me!

Contact me in-world, and I'll teach you how to make a script that changes the texture of one or more prims.

I got a set of scripts to Eryn in-world. And I must say, the avatar she is working on is exceptionally well-done!

Hmm... what happens if I use the UUID of a texture in my inventory and then delete the texture - will the script still work?

Yes, because the texture still exists in the LL Asset servers, even after you delete your copy of it.
