Group Builds

Hi,

I've had the pleasure of speaking with a few highly
skilled builders in SL. Some of them seemed to be
most comfortable working individually.

Are resident group builds ever undertaken, or a coordinated
effort (using guilds) made to implement construction in phases?

Do paid groups work together, specializing in tasks such as:
roads/paving/infrastructure, landscaping and water, sports facilities or
residential housing and finishing/texture work?

Thanks.

I've seen sim owners do this to their own property and also land barons going about 'adding value' to their real estate. Mostly assigning officers who are their close friends in charge of specific aspects of the area.

Paid organized 'consultants' are quite rare here as most builders are closer to artisans than professionals. To elevate beyond this you probably need a few things

i) letting go some of your ego as teamwork takes precedence over individuality
ii) standardization of everything from textures, scripting styles and general level of quality
iii) clearly defined scope of work and remuneration for each team member and also with the client
iv) some sort of consequence for not performing to standards

I'd personally like to see larger groups doing a dozen themed sims at once in a disciplined manner, but thats a fantasy for now.

I don't see why its not possible. I see lots of new builds at the mature sandboxes. I am learning, but from what have seen of this mech I built. (and that was just to see if I could do it) the response was postive. I would be game to help on a group build. Im me ingame. I bet with alot of talent and some general guidelines, anything is possible. Would almost be like a huge art class, and be fun to boot.

While having a group of a handful of people is certainly possible, what Darwin was alluding to was something probably on a larger scale, at a professional level. A bunch of friends getting together putting up some art installation over a few rounds of beer is more related to 'fun pastime' stuff.

But who knows, maybe after having getting used to building with a few friends, it might develop the group into something with some mettle to take on complex commissions. I wish you luck. :)

Darwin, I own a company that works this way, The Magicians. Our specialists include: Geomancer (terraforming, estate management, code), Illusionist (special effects, models, pulling clients out of a hat), Magus (code and behind-the-scenes infrastructure), and Shamaness (animals, animations, textures). Anything you see in one of our builds probably was created by two to four people.
