Again I'm a total noobie when it comes to this sort of thing..... any advice is appreciated.

There is a sticky at the top of this forum with some tools. Each tool (at least almost all) has a homepage that you can go to that tells you how to use it, most of the tools have some sort of tutorial. Sculpties can be both super easy and super hard to do, depending on the individual project. I recommend you take your time, learn one tool really well, and use that.

I use wings3d, its relatively simple and extremely powerful and free. I also use various specialty tools, but they each have their limits. To get exactly what you want, you're going to have to use a 3d modeller most likely, such as wings 3d, blender, maya, moment of inspiration, 3ds max, rhino, or something similar.Wings 3d, MoI, and blender are fre, MoI has probably the simplest interface but is most limited of the three. Wings3d is next on the easy scale, but is still a little limited. The very best in limits is blender, but its UI kinda sucks in my opinion. I cant do anything in it lol.

Thats my super short review of the free ones ;)

Good luck!
