any maya users that could help?
Im curious if anyone could help me with a workflow for getting photoshop type skins on a sl avatar in maya.
as it stands... i would have to do my uvs in blender to get the proper quad uv, texture template in zbrush, edit in ps, reload and export from zbrush to maya in dxf, just to get a skin in maya.........what am i missing?

it seems like it should be alot easier.
i dont want to paint in maya
i want to use a premade skin (that is fitted to the sl avatar template)
but im running into a problem
the skin is showing gaps like its got a wrapped uv even though the uv editor shows the sl
standard uv

how do you do this?

p.s I think i know the answer to this, but, is animation for hands and faces possible using maya, with custom bones? Im guessing sl only supports the generic hands and faces, cant hurt to ask?

That is incorrect. You would not be setting the UVs, you would want to use the UVs that are already assigned for the avatar downloads. Just load the texture into materials on the model.

As for animating hands, nope sl doesn't support custom hand animation.

well that's exactly what i thought
and thats what i tried to do
only to my dismay
only one uv set loads

so i guess what i need to know is how do i load individual textures for different uv sets?

i cant find a tutorial on this anywhere

I son't see the point as there are already decent templates out there.

It seems just to be complicating the procedure for the sake of it.

@Brandi: His question is about Maya, not Blender.

@Jax: This has nothing to do with templates. This is about viewing textures on a model in 3D, not about how to paint the textures in the first place.

@bacon: I'm really rather curious what exactly you are doing. I just loaded up Maya, imported the female avatar obj from the downloads section, and assigned a texture to her upper body with no problem. After you import the model, just open the Hypershade and you will see several materials listed there, named upperbody, lowerbody, and head. Assign textures to the Color attribute of those materials to see the textures on the model.

@ Johan .. a template is usually taken from a U/V unwrap .. so as long as it is followed it will look the same once re wrapped in SL.

sorry to add to OP P.S.

Yeah you can animate anything in Maya it all depends on the complexity of your rig .. although the finer details i.e. hands and fingers won't translate to SL.

simmer down everyone

ok

the materials thing i think is what i need to know
i cant figure out how to load my skins to the maya model
if some could answer that ....great!!

as for the rig ...i know i can make a rig to animate whatever i want...im ok with that
i wanted to know if i could use the animations in sl...i know i cant now

not sure what everyone else is talking about...but thanks for the replies...

next....i am pretty new to maya ...but my knowledge is accelerating...i put in about 12 hours a day...

problems im having....
i can only animate one side of my rig......i cant figure it out....i have ik on the arms and legs
it all works properly until i set a key frame
key frame is actually ok
next keyframe....move some more stuff around....set keyframe...
move the frames back to check it out
and one side always sticks....wth....

obj....how in the hell do you import export obj files
i dont have any options to import or export obj files
and as im not fully functional in maya...
i need to use blender, zbrush, wings, and ps, or in other words by any means necessary to get maya (hahahahahahah) work done not that im tryin to use them all...i use them as necessary
why??? this is ridiculous do i need a mel script...a plugin?? what gives

if anyone knows about the inworld rezzer and the advanced importer for sl i have some questions as well....

once again thanks for all you time

and stop fighting with each other..i dont want to have to take off my belt

also the reason to load in a 3D program is to rebake texture lightning / shading and add effects not easly painted, to animate you need to save bvh files to upload to Sl.
the avatar mesh (obj) files are not imported or exported from SL you can only change them in appereance mode in SL.
sorry i dont use maya but if you want texture help go to the texture forums
and if ya need animation help go to the animation forums :)

that last post didnt have anything to do with anything

do you think i dont realize that a 3d program is used to bake textures among other things?
did anyone even ask anything about that, or were you just looking to deposit some words somewhere. If that's the case, work for a magazine, they will pay you by the word.

if you dont use maya dont post a response in a maya thread...

i dont need texturing help, or animation help, i need maya help.

not trying to be rude....but that was ..ridiculous
