Please forgive my naivete regarding this question. I have searched with all the terms I can come up with, however a search is only as useful as one's vocabulary. Since I apparently don't know the correct terminology, I haven't been able to find my answer yet.
I am trying to build a building on a small plot of land which I own. Everything looks great until I leave my plot, at which point all the prims which make up my little proto-building get returned to my inventory. How do I set up my building so that it stays put?

If you're building on a plot which you *own*, nothing you put there should get returned.
Do you actually *own* the land though? Many land agents tell you that you now "own" land when you rent from them, but regardless of the terminology they use, as far as SL is concerned you don't, they still own it.

Yikes. I hope this isn't a "Hey buddy, I've got a bridge for sale" scheme. Right click on your land and choose "About Land." Who owns the land?

99% Sure I Own It

Well, I haven't looked in-game, but my account information on the web has the plot listed under "Owned Parcels". I think this definitively means I own it, does it not? - Fred.

You might own the one next door and you just missed it by a couple of feet

If your building's prims are linked, with one prim's center overhanging your neighbor's property, then that neighbor's auto-return might be causing the whole linked building to be returned. try unlinking your building after rezzing (or leaving unlinked after assembling) to see if only the prims near your property line are returned.
Another post I read today seems to indicate there may be a problem with auto-return near property lines. maybe a bug?

Might have been over the line

Yeah, that sounds very plausible - I was trying to build close to the property line. I will try again and put a small object smack in the middle of my plot. That should be a good test. Thank you.

I posted today about an item returned problem I was having yesterday but my problem had nothing to do with my log status and when the items were returned the game told me why it was being returned.
Do you get any messages when the items are returned to your inventory? This would be a very important clue for problem solving.

Fred, Just a suggestion... When I build near a parcel boundry, I go into "about land", find the boundry and place some boundry markers just my side of it, every 5m or so. Definately one in each corner. It helps if you use your camera to go up in the air about 30m or so, then rotate it down. This way you can see the parcel corners and mark them first. A nice tree makes a good parcel marker (but be courteous of your neighbor, don't overhang into their builds).

Problem Solved

Thanks for the help, everybody. I started building a nice house today and it stayed put when I went out for a little shopping. I have a very busy RL, so who knows how long it will take, but at least I know what I'm doing a little better. Thanks!
