MAP and big letters in the sky

When I use the "MAP" button in the client, I get a big overhead view of the SL world.

Some sims have easily visible and readable signs in this map view. I've teleported to these places and seen these signs. They're generally large flat prims at high altitude.

Some sims have large buildings on the ground which are also easily visible and recognizable in the map view.

I've tried creating similar large structures, but not had them appear on the map. My general impression is that perhaps the map view does not get updated instantaneously, or there may be other rules about what is and is not visible in the map.

How often is the map view refreshed? Are there any special rules about what objects do and do not appear in the map view?

It doesn't update immediately, and I don't have a good sense of how often it updates - it has been somewhat irregular in the past. Maybe wait a week or so. The other thing to know is that only objects below 400m altitude appear on the map.

In my experience, it can be weeks. that may be different now, but my changes took forever to show up when I moved in last summer.

Last week the map of my island updated and the time before that was 3 weeks after the last satellite photo. :)

I have recently purchased some land during that big Land Grab on the southern continent and since then the map has indeed updated. That was within 10 days ago I believe.
