I created some mountains and waterfalls in RCT3 and was wondering if anybody has successfully transferred the data over to SL.

Can whole amusement parks be done?

RCT3 Files are '.ovl Files'.

It's theoretically possible... however, I've never heard of .ovl files, and I don't know of any converter or anything for any other format to/from .ovl. If you can open the files in any modelling program at all then it is 100% certain to be possible, however, since there is a plugin or script for just about all of them to be able to make sculpties (Or you could change it to a format a program that does allow sculpties to be made reads, and then export it from there, at the very least.)

I'm actually thinking that it may not be within the EULA of Rollercoaster Tycoon to do this, you'll wand to read their rules and such before attempting it if you do find a way.

Seems that .ovl files are a really old (DOS) file. I see no evidence of a converter so far.

Description that seems common from a few sites fo a .ovl file:

When running in a 640K MS-DOS machine, all program code may not fit into available memory at the same time. To overcome this memory limitation, most large programs use overlays. An overlay is a portion of the program code that shares memory for its code with other code modules. Note: This file type can become infected and should be carefully scanned if someone sends you a file with this extension.

And I don't see any eveidence of an aailable converter/plugin either. So... you may be able to find someone with the ability and willingness to make one, but.. I've no idea on that bit.

I'm really doubting the overlay files are the same as the exported Rollercoaster Tycoon files. With only 3 letters you're bound to get some re-used filename extensions. =)

If it's an open format, someone can prolly write a libsl-based app that would read in the OVL file and rez it in-world using a bot... but I've never heard of anything like that.

A few webpages seem to suggest the ovl file(s) contain sprites, and may have something to do with something called LibOverlay

Actually one of the sites (At least one) referred to it as verlay while also mentioning rollercoaster tycoon.

No idea though.. never played the tycoon games, let alone wanted models from em.

Ahh ok.. found a better description dealing with RCT,

RollerCoaster Tycoon Program Sprite---Sprites are usually entites that are used to make physical objects glow or appear in different colors. ..

Just back from hols, so apologies for my tardy responses.

I am wondering if it will help anyone technically research this if I track down one of my old RCT files and post it here? Maybe seeing the actual exported files would help us see if this is worthwhile trying?
