off-center prims

Hi,

I'm posting this here cause I'm not sure where else to put it. It's not really a technical issue, so here we go:

I understand that its currently not possible to change the center of a prim. Sure, there are some ways to simulate its uses, like linking to another prim to focus as the center, and cutting away part of the object to move the visible part away from the center.

But those are tricks that only work in some cases, and what i have in mind involves a bit more.

Rotation of course would happen around this pivot point.
One of the big reasons i'd like this is to be able to link multiple items that dont rotate around its own axis into one object, without have to let them remain unlinked. Say for a closet with 4 doors or a themepark ride.

The center of hollow and holes could also be centered around the new pivot point. either twisting it, mediating between the edge and the center, or just shifting the hole sideways, making it possible to create a cut out (example: a cub with half a sphere cut out from the top).

I'm not sure what effect this would have on other features like twist and such, but i'm sure it would allow for an entire new range in shapes we can create.

Do you all think this might stand through the vote test and/or could be a useful addition?

Greetz,
Amber

I think that this will be a useful addition to centering prims, however I think it might be more of a "nice addition" more than a needed one. Do I think that they will eventually add this? Yes. Do I think soon? Probably not since they are already adding in tons of other stuff for 1.10.

I get a bit lost with the implementation of the idea, but looks like a way to simplify the complexity of rotative joins (hope I wrote it right :-p).

You can count with my votes :-)

sounds interesting though a bit complex in explanation. I think I understand the concept and usefulness however. It would be very handy in reducing prim counts on some things.......wanders off thinking......

I have frequently wished that we could change the pivot point for rotation.

Being able to change the rotation pivot point would be very useful, yes:

Currently the need to use a convoluted sequence of cuts and hollows to get the center where you want it is very troublesome.

I like the suggestion of being able to move the center of 'hollow' too- it would allow for much neater arches, etc.
