Have the link distances changed?

Today I just tried linking 2 0.5 X 0.5 X 0.5 cubes 5 metres apart and they failed to link. I got the bad old 'Link failed yada, yada' blue dialogue box. Is this happening to anyone else? And before anyone mentions it, I've been building and selling prefabs and treehouses for over a year. Seems to me that linking is on the verge of being broken.

Nope. We never could reliably link small diameter items that far apart.

The following quote is rather dated, but explains the problem.

Authoratative answer is HERE.

Andrew Linden Says:
From: someone
The simple approximate answer is: The maximum distance between the center of masses of the two primitives is the smaller of the two distances below:

(1) 32 meters

(2) three times the largest dimension of the largest primitive (plus 1 meter)

What this means is :

(A) very small objects can be a max of about 1 meter apart

(B) very large objects can be a max of 32 meters apart

(C) a 10x10x10 meter cube can be about 31 meters from a 0.01x0.01x0.01 cube

Based on that, two objects 0.5M in dimension won't reliably link to each other if they are more than 2.5 Meters apart.

Thanks Ceera. That's what I get for working exclusively on large-scale projects and then getting small-scale work fall into my lap!

Okay, but can one link objects in a chain - for example two 0.5m diameter objects 2m apart, followed by a third 0.5m object 2m from the 2nd and so on and so forth?

Yes, you can, to the 32M limit from end to end of the chain. For example, I have no problem at all linking a 30 M long series of 0.5M sphere, each 2 M from the next in the series. I've done it several times, for marker bouy lines in the water around a marina.
