I'd like to show you the product of days of work and 27 A4 notepad pages worth of scribbled diagrams and calculations; a geodesic ball, aka buckminsterfullerene ball, aka bucky ball, that is as accurate as I can get it (SL's 0.001m grid graininess and 0.05 degree rotation graininess certainly didn't help matters).

I've seen mention in the forums of geodesic balls being built using importers and tools...has anyone built one manually in SL before?

(They're going to be for sale btw. IM.)

Looks great, Musuko. To answer your question, I haven't seen a hand-built perfect geodesic sphere in SL before, but that doesn't mean it hasn't been done. There are plenty of script-built ones around though. You have my respect for doing it by hand (no offense, programmers).

Myself, I've built large ovoids and saucers out of triangles, just never had call for an actual sphere, which actually sounds pretty strange now that I think about it. It's all the same principle though, so I know how much work you must have put into the sphere. Nice job. It turned out really well.

Wow! looks great. :) Is it on display in-world anywhere? I'd like to fly around it for a bit and soak in the Shiny. hehe

It's on display...but not yet, if that makes any sense. It's the jewel at the centre of the island sim Tartarus, which has yet to open (I need to finish the construction first). It's the new home of The Fur Dungeon.

Building a sphere is harder than a dome, I found out. You have to start assembling from one end, or both ends...and any little innacuracies at the start will translate to badly-aligned joints at the equater or opposite end. Caused me some headaches, I can tell you.

Hand made!? That's some dedication, my friend. Personally I use a XyObject machine which builds the same for me in seconds flat :p

Cool build! And impressive work, I might add. I think I'd tear all my hair out if I tried something like that.

Ah, but does it give you a 0.003m edge overlap to stop visible joins and/or seeing through into the interior? Does it make the thin edges completely transparent to stop flicker? And does it give you a control panel allowing you to change the entire dome's colour, transparency and solidity at the touch of a button? ^_^

ok, first things first.. awesome work! and by hand? even more impressive!

and second.. did you say, "Tartarus"?!?!?!?

this doesn't have anything to do with the old cyberpunk RPG sim does it? (originally, Celina)

either way, sounds like a cool place. i really MUST come visit once it's open!
