is Hexagon worth learning?

Hi

I purchased Hexagon from Daz3D a couple months ago to have a nice sculpting tool. Im pretty new to general 3D modelling tho, so having a community thats supportive is important.

However i've noticed more hostility in Daz's own forums towards Second Life than I've seen support. Any time i ask about Second Life, i get responses that I should just use Carerra, which while may be a great app, is totally missing the point of why im using SL.

There's been a lot of bugs in the app too, on both my Win & Mac platforms.
Just wondering if its worth taking the time to learn this or not. Thanks for any opinions.

Perhaps its too early to decide...

It isn't really that complicated. Hexagon is just a modeler and very few of its features can be used to create sculpties and so it could be learned in an hour or two. Try it and if you like it, use it. Sculpty making in any program simply involves dragging vertices around.

I tried Hexagon long before sculpties arrived and I wasn't impressed by the fact that its texture painting features lack an undo. Paint a brush stroke incorrectly and you're screwed. But the main reason I don't use Hexagon is because it can't handle very many polygons and its symmetry was quite poor. If your model loses symmetry while modeling in Hexagon then you're stuck. There's no magic 'Restore Symmetry' button like in ZBrush or Mudbox. Although ZBrush very rarely loses symmetry in the first place. Whereas Hexagon loses symmetry very easily. The program would give me an ulcer.

But still, I do think it's a nice introductory program for somebody that wants to make the odd sculpty here and there. But it's only gonna take you so far and eventually you'll end up using another program.

im soon to run out of time on my zBrush demo and will probably end up purchasing it if i can manage to justify the cost. I have been runnign thru some tutorials but at pixelogic.com and shiny life. Absolutely beautiful application, but i havent gotten around to making any sculptys yet (more mesmirized by the app itself)

with zbrush is there any need for an app like hexagon around? I'd like an app that handles geometric shaping as much as moulding organically. I use sculptypaint for a lot of those but its definately specialized (love it anyways)

thanks.

Well if you're not bothered about details and just want to make geometric shapes then Hexagon will be fine. It's probably better than programs like ZBrush for basic shapes because you can select edge and face loops. Although ZBrush can also do this type of modeling if you use the radial symmetry. It's definitely quirky though :)

Thanks much for the tips. i see you made the tools to allow for sculpty exporting from zbrush. great to get the tips from someone so knowledgeable . thank you.

Just sucks about hexagon/etc that there seems to be a lot of SL haters over at the Daz forums. Hexagon seemed like a nice simple and cheap sculpt maker for the tool chest. Hopefully itll get better

I think that Hexagon is a good tool alongside zBrush. I've been using Hexagon when I want exact per-vertex control of an object, something I haven't managed to accomplish in zBrush. I start out in zBrush with a sculpt or even just a zBrush primitive, load it into Hexagon for tweaking, then export back into zBrush to finish and texture.

For instance, I've finally managed to create a sculpty with several distinct shapes in 1 prim - something I don't think i could manage with just zBrush alone.

It seems link Hexagon's features are very similar to the free Wings3D modeler, but I prefer Hexagon's interface. It reminds me of some of the early 3d modeling software that I worked with many years ago.
