Lights not blocked by walls?

I built a "strobe light" that blinks. Problem is, the light is not contained within my building and is annoying the neighbors. Is there anyway to fix this or are lights really broken?

Thanks,

lights are not broken....

...it's that shadows are not implemented.
You can set your radius and falloff to limit how far the light travels.

Remember to test what you've done with both local lighting and "sun only" lighting
so that you know what all players will see. Not everyone has local lighting turned on.

Saying that lights are "broken" is a little misinformed. This is just how 3D graphics work, this isn't something LL broke. What you have to realize is that figuring out which rays of light are occluded by obstacles is a big job, and not something that can be done on the fly for realtime graphics. If you have access to a 3D graphics package try putting a bunch of lights into a scene, turn on shadows, and time how long it takes to render the scene.

The fact that solid surfaces do not block local lighting or even sunlight is one of the limitations of the current state of real-time 3D rendering. You can be 50 meters below ground in a cave, with many layers of cave above you, and the sun still shines on you. Go figure...

The only work-around is to set your fall-off rate so the light doesn't spread as far. You can't block it or make it directional. More's the pity.
