I'm making a kiosk-type object, with several rectangular buttons at the button, but the edges of the buttons are very jagged, maybe because they are small, or maybe because they are embedded within another prim. Is there any way to make these prims looks smoother?

the prims that are touching are not on the same plane. the face of each button is on the same plane as the face of the other buttons, but they are not touching.

Can you post a picture of what you're seeing? This could be anything from planar overlap, as Osgeld suggested, to poor texturing to bad settings on your video card. There's no way to know without seeing it, or at the very least, a more detailed description of exactly what you're seeing.
