so i rezzed a simple cube to see what you could do with minimum components and tried to hollow it out - the top and bottom faces disappear. is this normal? cube is 10 x 10 x 5 m, hollow tried up to 95

That's exactly how a hollowed cube behaves in SL. Try searching for the ivory tower or primitives when you are in SL and you will see the way each prim behaves with hollowing, path cutting, twisting, etc.

Yadni's Junkyard has a learning center in the corner displaying a chart of prims and how they look modified to various settings. Its also a good place to pick up qualiy freebies.
